IVUpha Zeta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., was well represented recently at a four day conference in Richmond, Virginia. Over 800 Alpha Kappa Alpha women from North Carolina and Virginia convened at the 28th annual conference of the Mid Atlantic Region. The hostess chapters were Delta Omega and Alpha Epsilon of Petersburg. . The conference formally convened with Dr. Curtis Bryan, executive vice president of Virginia State Univer sity and John Bond, city manager of Petersburg, exten ding greetings. The conference was filled "with in teresting and informative sessions from parliamentary procedures, undergraduate activities, tour of Rich mond, human relations session to activities for husbands and children. This year's theme, "Influencing Decisions: A Design for Action in the 80 V was a most appropriate theme as Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc., is the oldest Xfreek letter organization founded by black college women and is composed of more than 75,000 women. The thrust of the conference revolved around this theme. Alpha Zeta Omega's Dr. Caroline Lattimore, a workshop leader, stressed the need for chapters to iden tify local resource people, sorority members- und non members, and keep them aware of sorority activities. - Dr. Lattimore is the regional coordinator of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Connection, the national network for mobilizing the membership of Alpha Kappa Alpha in an effective manner to influence political, social and economic issues in the 80's. Alpha Zeta Omega members assembled an impressive exhibit of handmade arts and crafts that, was displayed al the regional. This effort was organized by Ms. Shyvonne Steed. Miss Sheila Womack, president of Alpha Chi, the chapter at North Carolina Central University, was presented an award for her endurance and perseverance in working so diligently with the sorority this year. This presentation was made by Mrs. Evelyn R. Syphax, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Director. The final day of activities included a worship service and breakfast in honor of the members who have been ki the sorority for 25 to 49 years. Alpha Zeta Omega's ISss Marie Faulk was one of the honorees in atten dance. . Dr. Barbara K. Phillips, national president of AKA, stressed to the members that " 'Influencing Decisions' A Design for Action in the 80V is a mandate which will not permit any member to be complacent. The mood of Congress reveals postponement and deregulation of im portant educational guidelines. . . .changes in support of child nutrition programs. . . .civil rights losses. In deed, we must influence decisions to the end that all of s are better served." -. The Yahama Social Club met Sunday, May 24, at the home of Bill and Marie Moize. Following a short bu sienss session, the members were served a delicious meal by the host and hostess. Birthday honors were given to Remell Clemons who celebrated her birthday in May. The following members attended: Roscoe and Zola Baines, Kenneth and Remell Clemohs, Richard and Rosalyn Cole, Robert and Rosa Edwards, Pearl Haskins, Lauretta Hayes, Jarpes and Majorie Johnson, Elizabeth Pretty, Clementine Self, Clara Tate, Velton and Edna Thompson and Pauline Throckmorton. The June meeting will be held at the home of Elizabeth Pretty on Sunday, June 28. Bridge-A-Dottes Honor Retirees The Governor's Inn was the setting for the Retire ment Luncheon given, by the Bridge-A-Dettes Bridge Club as they honored Mrs. Andolia Eaton, one of the founders of the club, and Mrs. Estelle Belcher, a charter member. Following the luncheon, the festivities continued at the home of the president, Ms. Eraine Jones who, with the members, Mmes. Virginia Bivens, Gladys Rhodes, Dorothy Mewborn, Belle Harden, Jessie Kearney, Edith Stroud, Emmalene Reade, Ethel Taylor, Almeda Spears and Viola Lawrence, hosted a 28 women's bridge for the honorees. Attending the affair were Mmes. . McNeill, Bebe White, . Catherine Poole, Bea Cha Marie Kearney, Virginia Alston, Willie Mae Banks, B nice Clark, Knotsie George, Willie Saunders, There Jefferies, Alice Biggers, Minnie H. Cromartie,. Mai Young, Connie Pattillo and Alma Biggers. Each honorees- received a silver charm bratqet engraved with the bridge club's name, the yearjpf nyr retirement and her name. .
