; .l.liU-imjji SAT., JUNE 13, 1981 THE CAROLINA TIMES -5 ADF Opens June 19 From Senta Driver to George Balanchine The 1981 American Dance Festival will open June 18 with a varied program per formed by the North Carolina Dance Theater and Senta Driver's dancers. "Resettlngs," a modern dance work by Senta Driver, will premiere that evening in a performance by the Dance Theater with three members of Ms. Driver's company, Harry. The world premiere, commissioned by the Festival with the assistance of the N. C. Arts Council, will be per formed each evening of the companies' ADF ap pearance, June 18-20. Also on the opening night schedule is the Dance Theatre's performance of "Square Dance," choreographed by George Balanchine with music by Corelli and Vivaldi. That performance will be repeated June 19. Opening night will launch the fourth season in North Carolina for the 47-year-old ADF, Performances are scheduled through July 25 for the Festival, interna tionally acclaimed as the "mecca of modern dance." ADF president Charles Reinhart noted, "By com bining the avant-garde choreography of Senta Driver with the diverse reper toire of the North Carolina Dance Theater, we are offer ing an evening sure to be pleasing in its variety." "Resetting," a work for 13 dancers, is the third ADF commission for Ms. Driver and her first creation for a ballet company, much of it will be performed in silence or to sounds created by the performers themselves. The final portion is set to a seg ment of Purcell's "Dido and Aeneas." The Dance Theater will also present Oscar Araiz's "Women" and Salvatore Aiello's "Piano Concerto No. 1" on June 18-19. On June 20, the Dance Theater program will include Norbet Vesak's "Meadow Dances," Charles Czarney's "Dreamscapes" and Aiello's "Clowns and Others." All performances will begin at 8 p.m. in Duke University's Page Auditorium. The opening night au dience is invited to a cham pagne reception following the performance, hosted by the Association for the American Dance Festival. The North Caroling Dance Theater began in 1969 and has since become one of the major regional dance groups in the U. S., performing in more than 150 cities and 25 states. The Dance Theater's artists are proficient in both ballet and modern dance, and its repertoire includes a wide range of styles. Ms. Driver, who holds a master's degree in dance from Ohio State University, performed with the Paul Taylor Dance Company from 1967 to 1973. In 1975 she formed Harry, her own company of five dancers, which quickly drew attention with her brainy, witty but ec centric creations. Senta Driver works com missioned by the ADF also appeared at the Festival in 1977 and 1978. . An Evening of Jazz and Dance, with the Johnny Grif fin Quartet and dancers Scoby Stroman and Jafar Abdullah, will complete the Festival's permiere weekend Sunday, June 21. Also scheduled are the Dance Theatre of Harlem, June 23-27; May O'Donnell Con cert Dance Company, June 30; Laura Dean Dancers and Musicians, July 2-4; the "Emerging Generation" Companies, July 7-12 at Stewart Theatre in Raleigh; Chuck Davis Dance Com pany, July 14; Vaudeville Alive and Dancing, July 16-18; and Pilobolus Dance Theatre, July 21-25.
