Approximately 500 parents and teachers had attended the May 18 meeting to protest the decision to recommend the transfers, which Dr. Mayer said, she had made without consultation with board members and staff, because she felt that ad ministrators slated for the tranfers could better serve the school system in the recommended positions. After the lengthy ex ecutive session on May 18, before which 32 parents and teachers had asked that the school board deny Dr. Mayer's recommenda tion, the school board postponed a decision on the matter until last week's meeting. Mean while, parents and teachers continued to voice their opposition in the form of petitions and meetings with the superintendent. At last week's meeting, the board again held an executive session on the matter and drew a split vote on the recommonda tion, a vote which some parents say surprised them because it had been rumored that the school board had favored the transfer request. After the board vote, Dr. Mayer withdrew her recommendation, stating that she will review the system at the end of the; coming school vear (1982), and then make recommendations based on that review. Two administrative vacancies have occurred in the school system due to promotions and retire ment, and Dr. Mayer said that she will fill them from outside the system rather than tranfer ad ministrators from within the system. Dr. Mayer assumed the position of superintendent of the Chapel Hill Carrboro School Ssystem in December, 1980, upon the resignation of former superintendent, Dr. Robert Hanes.
