Both Scoby Stroman and Jafar Abdullah were developing . their dance techniques during those years,- alongside the great jazz musicians of the era Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Max Roach and the like. Clarence "Scoby" Stroman was introduced to the Brooklyn stage as a tap dancer in 1936 at age 5. When he was 20. he helped form a Be-Bop dance quartet which performed with such bands as Randy Weston, Max Roach and Thelonious Monk. Stroman later performed as a profes sional drummer for many years, then returned to scat dancing in 1979 with the Johnny Griffin Quartet as one of his first collaborators. As a drummer and dancer, Stroman has performed all over the U.S. and in several foreign countries, bringing to them the kind of jazz and dance that emerged when jazz was still "hot." Jafar Abdullah began his dance career in 1948 at the Club 78, the jaz comer in Brooklyn where all the greats of that era appeared. During the Be-Bop years, Abdullah worked with artists like Max Roach, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Randy Weston and Scoby Stroman. He is now semi- . retired and only dances, he says, for "special perfor mances." Johnny Griffin, the S-foot-3 "Little Giant" from Chicago, is a brilliant techni cian noted for the intensity of his playing and its uncom promising, purity. He began playing the saxophone at age 14 in Chicago and later worked with artists such as Lionel Hampton and Thelonious Monk. In 1963, despite an established reputa tion. Griffin left for Europe for over a decade of ex patriate life, which ended with a triumphant U.S. tour in 1978. He now lives in southern France, returnine to the U. S. for regular tours. Other members of the Griffin quartet are pianist Ronnie Mathews, bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Kenny Washington. The ADF season continues through July 25 with the Dance Theatre of Harlem; May O'Donnell Concert Dance Company; Laura Dean Dancers and Musi cians; "Emerging Genera tion" Dance Companies, at Stewart Theatre in Raleigh; Chuck Davis Dance Com pany; "Vaudeville Alive and Dancing"; and Pilobolus Dance Theatre.
