The $25,000 annual
award, established in April,
honors lifetime achievement
in , modern dance
choreography. It is made
possible by a contribution
from ' Samuel Scripps, who
. will x participate in the
ceremony July 19.

They are "Lamentation,"
"Errand into the Maze,"
and a pas de deux from Miss
Graham's most recent work,
"Acts 1 of Light," which
premiered in February at the
Kennedy Center.
Miss Graham, one of the
founding artists of the
American Dance Festival in
1934, has long been recogniz
ed as a dominant force in the
development of modern
dance. - Since her first New
York season in 1926, Miss
Graham has been noted not
only for her original move-'
ment vocabulary and her in-,
novative teaching - methods,
but . for her monumental
creativity. .Her company,

which has operated con
tinuously since 1926, is the
oldest American modern
dance company.
Miss Graham, who danced
with the company until 1969,
is still extremely active as a
choreographer and teacher.
In 1976, President Gerald
R. Ford awarded her the
Medal of Freedom, making
Miss Graham the first
dancerchoreographer to
receive this high honor. She
has received many other
awards, . including the Ken
nedy Center Honors in 1969
for her significant contribu
tion to American culture
through the performing arts.
Mrs. Ford's lifelong in
terest in dance began at age
8, when she studied dance in
Grand Rapids, Mich. After
graduation from high school
in 1 936, she attended two
summer sessions at the
American Dance Festival in
Bennington, Vt., then called
the Bennington School of
Dance, where she first met
Martha Graham.
Mrs. Ford continued her
dance career with Miss
Graham in New York City
eventually as a member of
the Martha Graham Concert
Dance Company. She
returned to Grand Rapids in
1941, where she formed her
own dance group and taught
dance to handicapped
children.
As First Lady, Mrs. Ford
focused her attention on the
arts, handicapped children
and women's issues. A past
honorary chairman of the
ADF, she is currently a
member of the board of
trustees of the Martha
Graham Center of Contem
porary Dance.
The Scripps ADF Award is
the first of its kind in the
history of American modern
dance, and the largest sum'
ever to be awarded annually
- to a dance artist. The red-'
, pient will be selected each(
, year by a specially appointed
' panel.
