' -if 1 Vi A.i',- Kiddie Kollege Parents Participate in Workshop A Parents Workshop was held at Kiddie Kollege Day Care Center on July 27. It was conducted by Mrs Em ma Rainey and Mrs. Susie Lee, both educators in the Roanoke Rapids City School System. Mrs. M.A. Ricks, director of the NCCU Learning Center, was also in at tendance. Topics discussed centered around shoelace tieingk use of flannel boards and preparing children for kindergarten. Parents had an opportunity to mount a lace type shoe on wood with glue, and make a flannel board using flannel; glue, tap and cardboard. These Mr. and Mrs. Hugo Carter and children have return ed to Hampton, Virginia after having spent vacation with her father, Isaiah Parker in Bahama. . National Mrris.te Celebrates 30thMhiver$ary National Barristers' Wives, Inc., observed its Thir tieth Anniversary during the annual meeting held July 25-August 1, at the Detroit Plaza, Renaissance Center, DetroitMichigan, in conjunction with the Fifty-Sixth Annual Convention of the National Bar Association. The NBA is the predominately black association of lawyers and judges within the United States and abroad. The Detroit Barristers Wives.'with Mrs. Alex Allen as president, were hostesses. Mrs. Dalton Roberson and Mrs. Raymond Sewell were co-chairmen of the national convention. - f With more than 3,000 members of the NBA, the NBW and their families in attendance, informative, educational and enriching seminars, tours and general meetings were effectively carried out by all segments. The National Barristers' Wives,' Inc., is noted for its unique program begun in 1969 the Dorothy Atkinson Legal Education Scholarships which has assisted many students to receive a legal education. With its theme of Family Survival in the 80's and with special emphases on the black family, Dr. Lena Wright Myers, noted professor at Jackson State University, led ' the informative discussion on black family members, and especially black women. The discussion centered on research done by her on black women of varying statuses from Michigan and Mississippi. These black women had risen to heights of achievement in spite of family handicaps. Dr. Wright is also author of Black Women Do they Cope Better? The Board of Governors of NBA and the Executive ' Board of the NBW, Inc., were tendered a reception and tour of "Manoogian Mansion", the official home of Mayor Coleman Young on Lake Michigan. Mayor -Young and his official hosts greeted the guests. The Edsel Ford Mansion on Lake Michigan was also the site for tours and a reception sponsored by the NBA presidents. The Judicial Council tendered a reception and tour of some of the notable homes of blacks in Palmer Park. Other highlights of the annual NBW convention in cluded a Detroit and Canadian Exchange tour with a discussion on the Black Heritage Museum by Mrs. Anita Travis, native black Canadian. It will be remembered that Detroit, Michigan was the last stop for slaves who had escaped the southern plantations for . freedom after crossing the Detroit River. Many markers attest to the fact as well as historic churches (black) which helped them in their quest for freedom. Mrs. Robert Archie, second vice president, presented the Regional Directors program which centered on Chapter Experience Sharing, Exhibits from chapters and other interesting facts. .National historian, Mrs. Melton Lewis, focused on founders and past 'national presidents and honored them for their contributions to the NBW. National president, Mrs. June Lott, presented pla ques for services rendered to Attorney DeLong Harris, certificates of appreciation to NBA president , William E. Borders and some members for outstanding services, Mrs. Harvey E. Wilbekin, Cincinnati, "; Ohio, was elected president of the NBW. Mrs. Robert Archie, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was elected president-elect. ' Several Dorothy Atkinson Legal Education Scholar-, ships were awarded. Attys. Acie L. Ward arid Sheila Parrish, former legal education scholarship awardees, were noted for the continuing successes in the legal arena during the annual fashion show luncheon. " Durham chapter members of the NBW in attendance included Mrs. LeMarquis DeJarmon, a founder and past president, and Mrs. C.C. Spaulding, Jr., a past president. Atlanta, Georgia will host the 1982 annual meetings of the National Bar Association and the National Bar risters' Wives, Inc. items were made for home use. There were several very helpful handouts available to the parents. there was also a brief discussion on available resources for children at the Learning Center at the Stanford L. Warren Library. Parents were encouraged to use the facility and to check out the many educa tional, but fun materials available. At present, the Center is open on Wednesday from 9 to 5 o'clock. the general purpose of Kiddie Kollege is to provide A warm atmosphere that is safe and healthy for pre-school age children so they can develop desirable attitudes, habits, skills and an interest andoy in learning. The Cumberland County Human Relations Advisory Commission meeting was held recently at Fayetteville Technical Institute. The bride is a graduate of Fayettevfole State Universi ty and is currently attending A&T State University's graduate school. She is employed with the Cumberland County Board of Education. The bridegroom is a graduate of John F. Kennedy Senior High School in Suffolk, Va., and is currently ser ving with the U.S. Army at Fort Bragg. The couple will live in Fayetteville. Retired 1st Sgt. and Mrs. Grady W. Ferrell announce the engagement of their daughter, Miss Karen Daphne, to Theron Edward Mays, Jr., of Fort Benning, Ga.
