'She ex plains how Hammett in fluenced her writing and tells of the happy years they spent together on Hard Scrabble Farm in Pleasantville; New York. "Dash had a misUken belief that there was plenty of : time for everything," Hellman confides, "and, of course, there wasn't.' ' During the third program In- the 'Profile" l.series, Hellman speaks freely of the McCarthy era in American history, and tells of her testimony: before the House Committee of. Un-American Activities in 1952. She ex plains her view that Watergate had its roots in McCarthyism and says that when she thinks of that time, she is "torn between laughter and tears." The fourth program focuses on the hardships Hellman had to endure as a result of the stand she took before the House Committee hardships that included the loss of her beloved Hard Scrabble Farm. She tells of the mysterious appearance of more than 100 deer outside her study window a few days before she and Hammett left the farm for good. "It was the most ? ... mysterious and J beautiful thing I have ever known,".she says, "as if a farewell party, a gift, had been given us." In the final program Hellman (offers a startling ' overview '-of her - life, ac complishments, and the evoluation of , her philosophy . She explains her ideas of the women's move ment,' abortion, ; religion, love, honor and courage, and gives an evaluation of her own success as a writer.
