publicity, and sometimes
controversy j as her profes
sional jife. She speaks frank
ly about "both in- Profile:
Lillian Hellman, a five-part
conversation with the author
beginning Sunday, August 16
at 6:30 p.m. On Center
Channel 4.
Hellman,' author of such
acclaimed plays as ''The Lit
tle Foxes,'?;Watch on the
Rhine,' "and "The
Children's Hour" and. such
critically praised books as
"An Unfinished Woman,"
"Scoundrel Time' and Ten
timento," talks with veteran
broadcast journalist Marilyn
Berger about her literary,
political and personal life.
Also featured in the series are
video presentations that
create a mosaic of the people
. and places of importance to
Hellman.
In the first program,
Hellman tells of her early
days as a struggling young,
playwright, her first taste of
success and the toll it took on
her emotions, her experience
writing for the movies , in
Hollywood, and her opinion
of the popular film "Julia,"
which was based on her
autobiographical story of the
same name.
Hellman reveals how she
finally discovered the fate of
her friend Julia's child a
mystery that had haunted her
for more than 30 years. Also
featured in the program is a
tour of Hellman's New York
apartment and intriguing
photographs from her:
private collection.
In the second program,
Hellman recollects her long
relationship with writer,
Dashiell Hammett. She ex
plains how Hammett in--
fluenced her writing and tells
of the happy years they spent, .
together on Hard Scrabble
Farm in Pleasantville, New.
York. "Dash had a mistaken ,
belief 4hat there was plenty
of time for everything,"';
Hellman confides, "and, oC
course, there wasn't."
During the third program
in the "Profile" series,
Hellman speaks freely 6f the
McCarthy era in American"
history and tells of her
testimony before the House
Committee of Un-American .
Activities in 1952. She ex-
plains her view that
Watergate had its roots in
McCarthyism and says that
when she thinks of that time,
she is "torn between laughter
and tears."
The fourth program
focuses on the hardships
Hellman bad to endure as a
result of the stand she took
before the House Committee
hardships that included
the loss of her beloved Hard
Scrabble Farm. She tells of
the mysterious appearance of
more than 100 deer outside
her study window a few days
before she and Hammett left
the farm for good, "It was
the most mysterious and
beautiful thing I have ever
known," she says, "as if a
farewell party, a gift, had
been given us."
In the final program
Hellman offers a startling
overview of her life, ac
complishments, and the
evoluation of her
philosophy. She explains her
ideas of the women's move
ment, abortion, religion,
love, honor and courage, and
gives an evaluation of her.
own success as a. writer.
"Americans are brought up
to believe that we're all going
to be very happy," she says.
"It's a pleasant and op
timistic thought add nice that
we have it. But we pay a very
high price for it."
