OUVER CROMWELL ,
Cromwell was born, in Columbus, N.J., around .1752, but hit
ptrencage ii obscure. He is said to have been raised by Thomas
Hutchins, his maternal uncle, and made his living as a farmer.
. Cromwell returned to Columbui after the war, married and
lathered 14 children, eight of whom he outlived. Known as an
honorable man, he is said never to have "chewed tobacco nor drank
a class f ardent spirits." . r": r .
In his Jatcr years. Cromwell, who drew government pension of
S a year, lived on Last Union Street in Burlington, ti.J.
- He died on- lan. 2 I. in? 3, in the town of bis birth after passing
his Ulllth hinhday. Cromwell was buried in the churchyard of the
Broad Street Methodist Church in Columbus.
One of those who stood fast in the' crisis was a free black toldiei
by the name of Oliver Cromwell. Cromwell had enlisted at the outset
of the Revolution in a company commanded by a Capt. lowery,
attached to the 2nd New Jersey Regiment. He would see the war to
its end. And he would share in a great dramatic moment: Washing
ton's crossing of the Delaware. - -
