The fellowships are intend ed to provide direct support to artists who, over a period of years, have made substan tial contributions through the practice of their art. The awards allow artists to set aside time to work, to pur chase supplies and materials, and to achieve specific career goals. "The fellowship program resulted from a series of public meetings held by the N. C. Arts Council in 1978 at which artists from across the state advocated for direct support and recognition," Secretary Hodgkins said. "This program represents aft extension of the Council's programs for individual ar tists. The Council continues to support artists in residency programs in schools and communities." During even-numbered years, beginning in 1980, fellowships are available for visual artists. Poets, fiction writers, playwrights, com posers and choreographers are eligible during odd numbered years. The primary: considera tions for awards are artistic excellence, the importance of the fellowship to the artist's career at the time of applica tion and . past contributions to the art form. - Out-of-state panels in each art form recommended the winners. Serving on the dance panel were David White, executive director of Dance Theatre Workshop in New York City; David Vaughn, a dance critic; and Stuart Hodes, chairman of the Dance Department of New York University. The musical composition panel's members were Donald Erb, professor of music at Cleveland Institute of Music; Hale Smith, pro fessor of music, Manhattan University of Connecticut; and Miriam Gideon, pro fessor of music, Manhattan School of Music. The literary panel's members were Patricia Grif fith, a Washington, DC bas ed novelist and fiction editor for the Washington Review of the Arts; Richard Taylor, a poet and professor of English at Kentucky State University; and Paul Zim mer, a poet and director of the University of Georgia Press. They chose the four N. C. Arts Council fellowships from 10 applications- in choreography, 19 in musical composition and 63 in creative writing. "C'mon down, Big Duke!
