A person wanting to become a foster should take a look at his/her personal situai Could he/she best serve a child for emergency a few weeks, months, or long-term care, wl could mean years of caring for a child? The Durham County Department of Social vices needs foster parents for school age child children with emotional problems, physical mental handicaps adolescents, and sibling groi “special needs” children. The basic requirement become foster parents are not that difficult, must: — be 21 to 65 years old; — provide a healthy living environment andn standards for sanitation and fire safety; — have adequate sleeping space; and — have a stable income. The crucial and most important criterion becoming a foster parent is to be able to be comi ted to helping children. Most of these children come into care with emotional problems relalei physical, emotional or sexual abuse, neglect,ab donment or death of their parents or caretakers. The loss of family and friends, familiar places xan be extremely traumatic fo child. He may manifest his feelings of loss inm challenging ways. It might be necessary for foster parent to be an active participant and vocate for the child in school or participate in fa ly counseling. For children with special med needs, it might require special training. Thene of these children are many. Monthly informational meetings on foster are held at the Department of Social Services, dates and times, please call the Homefinding 1 at 683-3500. RAPE CRISIS VOLUNTEERS — Oriental sessions for women and men interested in becom volunteers with the Rape Crisis Center will belt on Wednesday, September 16 at the Wonie Center, 406 West Rosemary St., Chapel Hill, orientation session in Hillsborough will be: Thursday, September 17, at the First Ba] Church at Wake and West King Streets. Both sions will start at 7:30 p.m. Minority women are especially urged to beco volunteers. The Rape Crisis Center, which provi information and support to victims of sex assault, has received reports of over forty rapes, attempted rapes in Orange County this year, estimated that about one half of the women rai in this area are black. Volunteers are also needed to help with a prevention and education project to be present area schools this fall.
