Saint Paul's Acquires A Connoisseur of Music
Soon sports' fans, parade
followers, and music lover's
in general can be patting
their feet and humming tunes
to the beat of a newly formed
Saint Paul's College Mar
ching , Concert, or Jazz
Band under the direction of
the accomplished, Zedekiah
"Eli" Holmes.
The Music Maestro has
just been employed by the
College and plans to organize
and direct the versatile
bands. Holmes, who studied
under the late
internationally-known con
cert artist Hazel Harrison, is '
a former band director and
assistant professor of Music,
and is Professor Emeritus at
Tennessee's Knoxville Col-;
lege; has taught at Christian-;
burg Institute, Saint Paul's
College, the James Solomon
Russell High School, and has
served as "Music adjudicator
and consultant" in the States
of Virginia, North Carolina,
Alabama, and Tennessee.
Holmes, who performed at
the White House with the
Howard University Glee
Clubdurin& the Franklin,
Roosevelt administration,
received his A.A. degree
from Morristown College, a
B.M. degree from Howard
University, and M.M. degree!
from the University of'
Michagan. He also pursued
additional studies at Fisk,
I Western, Virginia State, and
Wisconsin University. He is
also a World War II veteran
and a graduate of the Army's
Instructors and Band Train
ing School. '
Dr. J. Farley Ragland has
published, a 'biographical
sketch' of Holmes in his
book Let There Be Music.
