Azalea Garden Club
Azalea Garden Club met at the home of

Visits in Baltimore
Mrs. Gertrude Cannady, 1301 North.Hyde Park
Avenue, Durham, spent a short vacation with her
son, Clyde Cannady, in Baltimore, Md., recently.
While there, Mrs. Cannady was guest of honor at a
cookout and evening of fun at the home of Douglas
Hester, along with Mrs. Sherree Richardson, Mrs.
Martha O. Allen, Mrs. Lillie Vaughn, Marvin
Redfern, other friends and relatives.
Thrifty Service Club
Mrs. Elizabeth Jones and Mrs. Retha Core
celebrated their birthdays by entertaining the Thrif
ty Service Club at the home of Mrs. Core recently.
The meeting was opened with devotion, after which
the president, Mrs. Aline Davis, presided.
Highlights of the meeting were a trip to John
Umstead Hospital, Butner. The club members car
ried a covered dish and entertained the patients in
the Ayscue Behavior Unit. A note of appreciation
was received from the nurse director and staff of
the Unit. Plans are in the making to visit the
children at John Umstead Hospital in the future.
A charity fund-raiser will be held on October 3.
The club serenaded the birthday ladies and gifts
from members were presented to them by the presi
dent.

Bessie Adams, Lillie Adams, Louise Thompson,
Queen Cooper, Christine Sales, Marie Harris, Alice
Wilson, Laura Thorpe, Mozell Flintall, Pearlie
Walker, Pauline Boxley, Aline - Davis, Milie
Williams, Mary Vanhook, Luna Holeman,
Genevieve Rogers, Rosetta Cobb, Elnora Ransom,
Pauline Hart and Lula Hester.
The next meeting will be at the home of Mrs.
. Mary Vanhook on Saturday, September 26.
Friendly Circle Meets
The Friendly Circle Club of St. Mark AME Zion
Church held its monthly meeting with Mrs. Lena
Thompson on Moline St., recently. Devotions were
opened by Mrs. Helen McNeil. Minutes were read
and approved. After the business session, a
, delicious repast was served.
Members present were: Mmes. Corene Brown,
Florence Littlejohn, Margaret'Bumpass, Louise
Frazier, Sarah Cameron, Helen McNeil, Lena
Thompson, Mary Coward, Dazel Stevens, Jones,
Hattie Geer; and Grover Burthey, who thanked the
hostess on behalf of the members.
The next meeting will be with Mrs. Florence Lit
tlejohn on Lawson Street.
Choir Tours Old Country
On Saturday,, Sepfembet 12, members of the
Mass Choir of Mount Vernon Baptist Church,
along with their families and friends, journeyed to
Williamsburg, Virginia to Busch Gardens (The Old
Country). A group of approximately 49 persons
boarded the chartered bus which left Mount Vernon
Church at 7 a.m.
Points of interest enjoyed at The Old Country
were: several theaters in the English section, rides in
the German section, food and gift shops in the
French section, and folk singing and entertainment
in the Italian section.
Mrs. Violet P. Rogers was the trip coordinator.
Mrs. Ruth S. McCollum and Jesse McCrite serve as
directors of the Mass Choir.
The Gleaners Meet
On Sunday, Sept. 20, members of the Gleaners
Club of St. Mark AME Zion Church met at the
. church, with Mrs. Louise Davis and Mrs. Hannah
Hamm as hostesses.
The devotion was led by Mrs. Florence Cooper
and the president, Mrs. Lula M. Royal, conducted
the discussion of the group’s future plans.
Other members who participated and enjoyed a
delicious dinner were: Bliss Royal, Mrs. Myrtle
McNeil, Mrs. Pearline Bullock, Ms. Thelma M.
Bullock, Ms. Annie Williams, Ms. Beatrice Sowell,
Parker Lee McDonald, Ms. Dorothy Steele, Ms.
Margaret Allen, Ms. Hattie McClain, Mrs. Kityola
Curtis, James Smarr, Madison McDonald, Frank
Williams, Willie Sherrill and a guest, Mrs. Nellie
Fogg.
Durham Chapter Observes
Continental Weekend
The Durham Chapter of Continental Societies,
Inc., observed its nationally celebrated weekend
beginning Saturday, September 19, with a cookout
at the home of Lillie and Frank Edwards.
On Sunday morning, the Chapter members wor-
shippe'd at the West Durham Baptist Church; Dr.
Harold J. Cobb, Sr., is the minister. On Sunday
afternoon, the group held its regular monthly
meeting at the home of Ms. Carol Williams.
