Central Eagles Idle
By Elson Armstrong, Jr.
There are two big
games in the' Triangle
Area this weekend. On
Saturday afternoon' in
Kenan Stadium, the
frolicking UNC Tar
Heels, with that man
Kelvin Bryant, take on
potentially. dangerous
Boston College in a game
that’s a sell out.
Under the lights in
Raleigh, the N.C. State
Wolfpack fresh from a
31-10 win over East.
Carolina, .' tackles
Maryland a team that’s
off to a disappointing
0-2 start thus far.
Duke travels to
Charlottesville to play
Virginia in a battle of the
winless. The Devils
should break into the
“W” column especially
if QB Ben Bennett is
ready to go.
N.C. Central has the
week off. The Eagles
went to Winston-Salem
and came up with a big
league win over
Winston-Salem State.

they’d better beware
because just down the
road for them are the
Texas Longhorns who’ve
beaten them for two
straight years.
Oh Yeah, lest we
forget, Georgia, last
year’s champ, was
devoured by a bunch of
charged up Tigers in
Death Valley (Clemson),
S.t.
Just who will be the
NCAA’s best football
team for this year? If I
could answer that cor
rectly, Td own the Mint!
If the first two weeks
are any example of
what’s to follow, then
the champ for 1981
might not be settled until
after the bowl games are
all played (just like last
• year).
A totally new
powerhouse may claim
the title this year if they
can avoid Ole Man
Upset. Instead of the
usual Oklahoma, USC,
Notre Dame, or
Alabama, this year’s
king could be UCLA or
North Carolina (where
they’re used to saying
‘We’re No. 1’ — in
basketball), or maybe
Brigham Young will pass
their way to the top. The
clash between Pitt and
Penn State could be for
all the marbles or maybe
Miami of Florida will
walk off with the prize.
Not only is the top ten
in uphelval, but around
the country it seems like
nothing is a sure bet
anymore. Consider:
Oregon thinks, they’ve
got a Pac-Ten contender,
but they are beaten by
Fresno (who?) State —
Fresno riding on cloud
nine promptly loses to
Oregon State who had
not won a game in eons;
Stanford is blitzed by
“Little Brother” San
Jose State; Wake Forest
beats Auburn in
Alabama after an 0-2
start at home; California
with enough injuries to
.check into MASH
upends Arizona, and so
on, and so on, and shoo-
^be doo-bee-doo!
Things are also topsy
turvy in the NFL, while
former powers Pitt
sburgh, Los Angeles,
and Minnesota are giving
games away. Former
laughing stocks Atlanta,
San Diego and Buffalo
have become the most
feared teams around.
The 1981 football
season promises to be a
fan’s delight and a
gambler’s nightmare as
nothing, I mean nothing,
is a sure thing, and that’s
the way it should be!
