According to Prof. Bradley Greensberg of Michigan State University, "The typical fictional character is a white male in his late 30's or 40's in the midst of very pretty, soft women." Blacks, says the professor, make up a small percentage of the TV "population" with half employed on. all-black shows. These TV blacks are younger, funnier, flashier and less likely to be employed than whites shown on the screen. The -'comic buf foon'' v is the typical black image, : So much for blacks and the Fictional TV pro grams, -but those lwho think blacks teWMd better in the news divi sion should think again. The three major com mercial networks employ a total of nineteen black reporters but only one (Carole Simpson, NBC, Capitol Hill) has a major beat. None of the net works has a single ex ecutive producer or vice president of news. Max Robinson, black co-anchor of ABC's na tional news show, caused a luror wnen ne was alleged to have charged that his network had discriminated against him and other black journalists by excluding them from coverage of the Presidential in auguration and the return of the hostages from Iran. With fury and scorn Robinson was quoted as saying that the news media are ' "a crooked mirror" through which "white America views itself" and that "only by talking about racism, by taking a professional risk, will I take myself out of the mean, racist trap all black Americans find themselves in." Unseemly pressure from top-level corporate quarters forced Robin- Harold Ford (Continued from Page 19) that have the greatest im pact on poor people and blacks such as Aid to Families with Dependent Children, Supplemental Security Income and Child Welfare Services. These programs are among those being sever ly cut by the Reagan Ad ministration. "My concern is that these services be restored in full because of the devastating' effect; these cuts will have on the 29 millio people living n poverty in this country," Ford said. Subscribe To The Carolina Times Call today 682-2913 son to retreat a bit but his words ring no less true. But just as cor porate big-wigs pressured Robinson, blacks must pressure these same fat cats if .change is to come. And it should not be forgotten that these characters are not omnipotent and, in fact, quite vulnerable. TV is a commercial medium. It exists not to entertain or inform but to make profits, mostly , through the ubiquitous i commercials that pock-, mark the landscape. In 1 1979, a total of 574 spon sors spent $4.7 billion on network television. Pro cter and Gamble again hsd j the Hst, followed ctOsilf- by ; .General Foods,-American Home Products (manufacturer of a number of home remedies), General Motors, Bristol Myers, Vrvrd Philin Morris. - - - - f . General Mills, Johnson and Johnson, and Pep sico. . Like Coca-Cola, recently forced by Jesse Jackson to make conces sions to blacks, all of these corporate giants have an Achilles heel ex posed to the black com munity that is aching to be lanced These spon sors should" be told in writing about the damage their shows are doing to blacks and the putrid hiring records of these programs when it comes to hiring. Ultimately, the weapon of organized ' boycott should be wielded. ? ln;any:?event, until hardball is played with the TV moguls, more of the same. insult should be expected. . ' Letter to the Editor: The Great Humanitarian . . Washington Duke The pro and con discussion involving the Nixon Library at Duke University, brings to mind the university founder, Washington Duke; Terry San ford, president of Duke( University; Lawyer Richard Nixon, our 37th President; and the Biblical Stone Throwers. . . . H' '' Washington Duke and his two industrious sons, James B. and B.N. Duke, were great humanitarians, with ability; foresight and wisdom. With them, God, human beings and the city and county of Durham came first . , Oppositions or challenges to progressive ideas for Durham, were considered to be personal affronts. Long years ago, Durham authorities planned t6 build a number of new school houses for all children, except Tor those who happened to be born black. Washington Duke, a devout Methodist, believed in justice for all. He ' informed the authorities, that before he'd continue to pay high taxes, and donate large sums of money for white children, and do nothing for poor black children t he would move his factories to England. Now, just suppose the authorities had not been reasonable men, and failed to listen to Washington Duke? For blacks, today - there would be no such commendable school structures as Hillside, W.G. Pearson, C.C. Spaulding, and others; no Lincoln Hospital, no historical St. Joseph's A.M.E. Church; no Duke Auditorium at N.C.C. Universi ty; no multi-million dollar Mechanics and Farmers Bank; no billion-dollar North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Co.; and no "Duke University Renown, The World Around." The, chief administrator, Pres. Sanford, Duke trustees and others, are in favor of the Nixon Library. There are others, some of whom, owe their jobs to these administrators, not only oppose the Nixon Library, but the continuation of Pres. Terry Sanford in office. -4 Richard Milhous Nixon was educated at Whittier (Calif.) College (B.A., 1934) and Duke University Law School (LL.B., 1937).
