Members on the honorary degree selec tion committee said that , Davis was chosen because of his unyielding support to black colleges and universities. Davis, who is acclaim ed as one of the greatest entertainers and who is the only black to own a share in financially pro fitable night clubs in Las Vegas, Nevade, is reputed to be one of the wealthiest blacks in the country and is said to contribute enormous sums of money to predominantly black in stitutions of higher education. In his teary acceptance of the honorary degree, Davis told the packed chapel audience that he "had never finished grammar school," but that he is committed to helping other blacks get an education. In his autobiography, Yes, I Can, Davis stated that he began entertain ing at the age of four with his father and un cle, and he has continued to entertain for more than fifty years. Dr. John Hope.. Franklin, distinguished historian and author of fifteen books and hun dreds of articles, and Dr. John Spencer, a scholar of African Affairs, also received honorary degrees of the Doctor of 1 .iterature. Dr. Franklin, who is perhaps best known for From ; Slavery To Freedom, an historical account of blacks in America, was the chief speaker on the program. He told the audience that in order for a university to maintain its in dependence, it is necessary for those who belieVe in it to continue to express this belief through their support. Dr. Franklin also said that there are signs that the support for predominantly black in stitutions is beginning to falter. Atlanta University is one of the oldest univer sities in the country. Distinguished scholars such as W.E.B. DuBois, . E. Franklin Frazier, arid James Weldon Johnson are listed among some of the university's former "professors. . 1 PRICED ITEMS DAY IN & DAY OUTll $128 tun 1 GAL JUG ARROW I I BLEACH ....... . . . 59c J & 36-CT.
