SAT., OCTOBER 31.1831 TKECAnSU?:ATi"SS-S Eagles Give viKings name zzu ELIZABETH CITY North Carolina Cen tral contributed to its own demise as their of fense "set up all Vikings scores when sixth-ranked Elizabeth City State defeated the Eagles 27-20 in a non-conference game at Northeastern High School Complex. The Vikings raised their record to 6-1, while the Eagles fell to 3-3. The Eagles set up all the Vikings scores with a fumble lost, two bad snaps to the punter and two interceptions. Despite this generosity, they nearly pulled the game out. Down 27-6 after hav ing failed to score mid way the third period, junior cornerback An drew Riddick returned a punt 33 yards to the ECS 7. Freshman quarter back Gerald Fraylon tossed a 7 yard score to reserve fullback Reece Carson. Fraylon ran for the extra points as the Eagles pulled to 27-14 with 10:46 left in the game. The defense, which limited the Vikings to 148 yards in total of fense, stopped ECS on its next series at their "17. A short punt .gave the Eagles the ball at the ECS 33. , It took nine plays, but sophomore tailback ' Mike Worthy went over from the two ' putting Central down by 'seven at the 5:21 mark. .-; Central had one more :. chance to try to pull it out. but was only able to move from its 34 to the 44. . The Vkings won the toss at the beginning of the game and took the wind. Central started '.' from its 20 and moved to the 33. On first and ten, Worthy fumbled the ball which was recovered by ECS linebacker Calvin Johnson. The defense held the Vikings and ECS junior kicker" Dwayne Whitfield booted a school record .50 yard wind-aided field goal with 11:51 left in the period. . Following the ensuing kickoff Central started again from its 20. Stopped in this series the Eagles were forced to punt. Central punter Joey Day stepped back to punt but never got the kick off. A bad snap forced him to run to the NCC 23. It took the Vikings 5 plays to up their count to 10-0 with Gary Sneed going the final two yards at 8:21. Elizabeth City struck twice in the second stan za. Sneed scored his se cond touchdown at the 12:03 mark on a one yard run. Again a bad snap set up the score. Johnson picked off a Fraylon pass and return ed it to the NCCU 17. The Eagles defense held and Whitfield split the uprights this time with a 25-yarder at 8:49. ' The Eagles got on the scoreboard before the half when junior wide receiver Victor Hunter recovered a 7 yard fum ble by tight end James Foster in the end zone. Central had marched 65 yards in 10 plays closing the score to 20-6 with 2:20 left in the first half. ECS scored its third touchdown when Willie THomas picked off another Fraylon pass and rambled 24 yards with just under two minutes to go in the third stanza. The Eagles won ,the statistical battle, but lost the game on the scoreboard. Central racked up 171 yards in total offense 95 rushing and 70 passing. The Vikings were held to 75 yards rushing and 73 yards passing by the nationally-ranked Eagles defensive unit. Ironically, the Vikings longest drives were 26 yards in the third period and 24 yards in the se cond stanza. The Eagles mounted a 79 yard march to the ECS 12 midway through the third period but a Fraylon interception kill ed the scoring opportuni ty. ' Va. Union 6-0 leads the Northern Division by one game over Elizabeth City State. The Panthers, who have clin ched at least a tie, can win the division outright by defeatinq Virainia State. Va. State 3-1 must beat Va. Union, Norfolk and Hamp-' ton and hope that Elizabeth City loses to Fayetteville or Winston-Salem. Elizabeth City 4-1 must defeat Fayetteville and Winston-Salem and look for Va. State to upset NCAA Division II third ranked Va. Union to gain a tie for the crown. On Wednesday, October 21 the Eagles fell to the Shaw Bears 15-13, 16-14 but rebounded on the 22nd to upend Fayet teville State 15-10, 15-7. Also on that card on Raleigh on the 21st, the Eagles defeated Elon 12-15, 15-13, 15-7 for the second time this year. The following night in Fayetteville they defeated Wingate Col lege 15-10, 15-1. The Eagles will play in the CIAA Tournament to be held at Hampton Institute, November 2 and 3.
