FACING WIDOWHOOD ' " Widowhood is an adjust ment that must be faced by at least one marriage partner in a lifetime,, and it is most often the wife. "Fifty percent of the women in the U.S. who are 66 are widows," says Isabella Buckley, extension aging, specialist at North Carolina State University. Only 9 percent of men aged 65 to 75 are widowed. The figure increases to 23 percent for men 75 years old and up. Men have a higher death rate than women at all ages and women often marry men who are older than they are, . thus increasing their odds of being left alone.
