Magie, Ph.D MJ.H. After the worldwide vic tory over smallpox, health of ficials are now pursuing the elimination of other infectious diseases. In the United States,, measles is considered the most threatening of child hood contagious diseases. A vigorous campaign began in 1978 to rid the nation of measles by, October 1, 1982. If it is. successful, the program could be k model for other countries desiring to elimi nate similar infectious dis eases. . , In the United States during the 1950s, before measles vac cine was available, an average , of one-half million cases were reported each year and it is estimated only one in ten cases were reported. Compli cations resulting from mea sles included pneumonia, en cephalitis resulting in per manent brain damage and mental retardation, ear infec tions leading to deafness, and a rare and fatal degenerative disease. An average of 500 died each year. In 1962, the year before vaccine was wide ly used, nearly five million cases of measles were re ported. After 1963, reported measles cases dropped by more than 90 percent. Three factors make domes tie measles elimination a pos sibility: (1) humans are the only susceptible host; (2) an effective vaccine is available; and (3) the number of people in the carrier stage without DENTURE WEARERS A major -advancement H CUSHION GRIP DENTUPr 'ADHESIVE one appi. ion holds comfortably y, to 4 clays detectable symptoms yet able to spread the virus is re duced. The United States program consists of four major efforts: 1. More emphasis on find ing and immunizing suscept ible adolescents and young adults, most of whom were born before vaccine was, in general use; ' ' " 2. More efforts to insure that school immunization re quirements cover children in all grades, and that these re quirements are enforced. 3. Broadening the scope of the present surveillance sys tem in order to find cases that would previously have gone unreported. 4. Improving the ability to control epidemic outbreaks. The campaign to remove a serious health threat is worth duplicating in every country of the world. However, mea sles is only, one of many in fectious diseases for which an effective vaccine is available. Persistent effort can bring the desired results that of elimi nating disease. brtU Health Dmartmrnt, Gmt ral Confaraie of toe Seventh-day Adventist Church, as a community service.
