It was founded , in 1968 by X Mrs, Elna B. Spaulding, and serves as a counseling and mediating agency. It also helps to coordinate cuiiununuy aia programs. : v The awards were made Wednesday night at a banquet at the Downtowner Motor Inn. Addressing the . group was Dan Hudgins, director of the Durham County Department of Social Services. : The St. Philips Soup Kitchen Was suggested by . Rev. C. Thommas Midgette, rector of St. Philips Episcopal Church on East Main Street. Each week-, day from 10 a.m. to noon, the program feeds as many as :w persons with meals or soup,- "sand wiches, milk, coffee or juice. The Center was a year round public service project of the Durham Alum nae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority;; Tlie Center, through its diagnostic and prescriptiv'prb grams, helped to improve .the quality of life f the participants by upgrading heading and math skills. As an outgrowth of the Life Development Center, the Durham Deltas set up an afer scbool tutorial program for eleventh and twelfth grader! who need ed help in passing the state required competency test.
