Wrapping Up
Christmas Season
;Jla Petite Garden Club, with all of the garden clubs
f Durham participating, is just a memory now, but
lUch a pleasant one.
:t The arrangements were beautiful some very .
unusual. Two members of the Dogwood Garden
Club, Mrs. Martin and Mrs. Harris, made top
honors. Blue ribbons were in the majority. The
Show was beautifully carried out with Mrs. Patricia
!&well as chairman and Mrs. W.B. Saunders as co
chairman. La Petite Junior Gardeners were also in
, ihe spotlight, carefully doing their assignments,
iftjider the direction of Ms. Vivian Timlic,' club coor
dinator. C The Christmas party for the Sunshine Rest Home
will be held in January.
. The Christmas Brunch will be held in the home of
the club's president, Mrs. Genevieve McCrea with
J, Robinson as co-hostess.
Bridge Club Winners
:K College View Duplicate Bridge Club winners for
December 10 were: First place-Douglas Kertinitz
and Mrs. Hedy Echard, second place-Curtis Norris
and Mrs. Mary Duncan, third place-Fred McNeill
and Mrs. Dorothy Mewborn.
' Azalea Garden Club
' The Azalea Garden Club met at the home of Mrs.
Ethel Allen on Pilot Street, Dec. 12. The meeting
was opened by Miss Mary Baines with the reading
of two beautiful and appropriate poems, a song and
a prayer for the Christmas season.
-The minutes of the last meeting were read and
adopted by members present. The recent flower
show was discussed. Mrs. Maggie Henry con
tributed, a mantel arrangement. Mrs. Charlotte
. Miller's arrangement won second prize. Mrs. E.H-

projects: a bazaar which was held at a shopping
center brought dollars to the treasury; another bake
sale was planned for early spring; and club
members were asked to swell the treasury with a
weight sale project. The project will conclude at the
next meeting. Miss Baines is planning a Christmas
Breakfast for club members. Entertainment and
, gifts for sick club members and the aged were
discussed.
'Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Plummer attended the
Botanical Garden Holiday celebration at Totten
Center Dec. 13. The exhibit was natural,
economical and beautiful. They encourage every
garden lover to see it.

Man" by Van Dyke were read to the group by Mrs.
Plummer.
,sMrs. Allen served a tasty turkey pinner with all

Installs New Officers
During a recent meeting of the Garden Clubs of
Durham Council hdd in the meeting room of the
County Library, a candlelight installation ceremony
for new officers was presided over by the group's
president, Mrs. Ella Brown.
New officers are: Ms. Genevieve McCrae, presi
dent; Ms. Doris Reddrick, first vice president; Ms.
Carrie Vereen, second vice president; Miss Mary
Baines, third vice president; Mrs. Mae W. Webb,
secretary; Miss Vivian Timlic, assistant secretary;
Mrs. Beulah Hill, financial secretary; Mrs. Susie
Martin, treasurer.
The new board of directors members are
Mesdames Elnora Smith, Emma Randolph, Ger
trude Gibson, Ella Brown; and Miss Mary L.
Stephens.
Special recognition was extended to La Petite
Garden Club in organizing a junior garden club of
ten members in grades 4-6.
Discussed was "Durham is Doing", a clean-up
campaign through the Clean Community System of
Durham, Inc., a local subsidiary of Keep America
Beautiful. Council representatives are president,
Mrs. Ella Brown, and community relations commit
tee, Mrs. Genevieve McCrae. The Council discussed
La Petite Garden Club Show, participation in and
attendance at county and state fairs, and the Gate
City Council of Garden Clubs, Greensboro. -
A report was given by Mrs. Helen Brown and
Mrs. Carie Vereen on the Queen Contest, a fund
raising activity for the Council. Tickets were
distributed.
An invitation was accepted from Miss Mary L.
Stephens of the West Durham Blossom Club, to a
Holiday House, December 20.

Dorcas Club Holds Meet
Beautiful in every waV was the Christmas meeting
of, the Junior Daughters of Dorcas Club held at the
home of Mrs. DeNina Austin on Janet Street,
December 4.
ffThe meeting was called to order by Mrs. Sarah
Smith, president. Following devotion and a short
business session, the meeting was turned into a very
lovely Christmas party.
, A photographer was invited in to take pictures of
the members. Christmas carols were sung and
prayer was offered by Mrs. Catherine Henry.
:'The house was beautifully docorated in the tradi
tional Christmas colors. Lots of gifts were placed
tinder the tree so that each member would receive a
gift. A special gift was presented to Mrs. Smith, the
president, and to Mrs. Austin, hostess for the
meeting, from all of the members by Mrs. Charmin
Watson and Mr$:Iosie Powell. A door prize given
by Mrs. Austin was received by Mrs. Catherine
Henry who held the lucky number.
Mrs. Edythe Johnson and Mrs. Watson acted as
Santa Claus to undress the tree. More caroling, and
tljen very pretty and tasty refreshments were served.
: The party was brought to a close with the singing
of "Joy To The World" and thanks being said to
iMr. and Mrs. Austin for a very happy meeting,

prison ministry sponsored a program at St.
Joseph's AME Church for the benefit of the
prisoners on Guess Road. Several prisoners were
present who' made up the Freedom Singers. Other
musical groups included the New Bethel Choir,
Mount Zion Ensemble, Pettiford Baptist Malev
Chorus, Oxford; the Horton Singers, Gospel
Herald Ensemble, The Lessie Williams Singers; and
Little Miss Deborah Owens and Dwight Kornegay.

The PAC held its regular meeting on Wednesday
afternoon, Dec. 2, at Operation Breakthrough Of
fice in the auditorium. Presiding was the chairman,
Mrs. Gladys Surles and secretary, Mrs. Ruth
Markham.
A nominating committee gave its report. All of
ficers retained thejr positions except Joseph Parker.

members enjoyed a Christmas party with a delicious

A workshop was held Saturday, December 4, at
the Tenant Steering Committee building on East
Main St., on recommendations for the community
, food and nutrition program Rinds. Speakers were
Clem Baines and Larry Corbitt, Legal Aid, Ms.
Willctte Crews.
