The bride's parents hosted a reception in the church fellowship hall following the ceremony. The bride is a graduate of Winston-Salem State University and is employed by the Cumberland County Board of Education at -44ope Mills-Junior High School. She is also the director of the Holland Homes Day Care Center. The bridegroom is ser ving in the U.S. Army at Fort Bragg. The scholarship fund, entitled the "21st Cen tury Scholars Program," will identify and assist outstanding undergraduates and pro mising graduating seniors at UNCF's. 41 private, predominantly black colleges. Inspired by the perfor mance of young black athletes who have become superstars in American sports, the Annenberg gift is intend ed to provide new oppor tunities for black' students to excell in their chosen academic pur suits. "Bright young people are our nation's most valuable natural resource'," said Am bassador Annenberg. "This program is design ed to identify the brightest students on UNCF campuses and make sure lhat each one has the financial support ' to study, excel and earn college and graduate degrees with distinction. It's the kind of oppor tunity disadvantaged . youngsters 'need if they are going to succeed to day." The "21st Century Scholars Program" comes at a critical time for black higher educa tion, according to Christopher F. Edley, executive director of the United Negro College Fund. Private black colleges andt their students are "uniquely vulnerable" to cutbacks in federally- funded student aid. Reductions in the largest federal student i assistance program, the Pell Grants, have already reduced by nearly $4 million the amount of scholarship funds available on UNCF cam puses, Three-quarters-'Of all UNCF students receive Pell Grants, com pared to 25 of college students nationally.
