SAT; JANUARY 23. 1982 THE CAROLINA TIMES -3 Hooray for Hollywood Presents "Julia" "Julia", the Academy Award-winning film based on Lillian tollman's short story, starring Jane Fonda and Vanessa Redgrave in the title role, premieres on public television as part of "Hooray For Hollywood, Saturday, January 30, at 9 p.m. on Center Channel 4. "Julia" was adapted from a story in Pentimento, Hellman's 1974 volume of memoirs, which recounts her lifelong friendship with Julia and the terrifying demands of that friendship against the backdrop t growing Nazism in Europe. Produced by Richard Roth, the film also stars Jason Robards as Dashiell Hammett, the ac claimed author of detective novels who lived with Hdlman for several yfars; "H I Holbrook; Rosemary irphy and Maximillian idl. Both Redgrave and (bards received Oscars for Supporting Perfor ,oces; Alvin Sargent won c .c Academy Award for Best Screenplay Adaptation. The film opens in 1934, as HeUman struggles to write her first play, and finds her memory returning again and again to - her childhood friend, Julia. Born into great wealth, Julia had grown in creasingly bitter toward her family, and had gone to Vienna to " study : Freud, where she became involved in the anti-Nazi movement; , -- In the yiari-et'ween'1934 and 1937, Lillian meets her friend in Europe twice. The first time, she finds Julia in a Vienna hospital, swathed in bandages and unable to talk. When Lillian returns to the hospital the next day, she finds Julia has undergone a Sunday mysterious operation and has left a note telling Lillian to leave Vienna as soon as possible. Lillian does not hear from Julia again until 1937, when she is approached by a friend of Julia in Paris, who asks Lillian to help their work in the -underground by smuggl ing money to Berlin. Lillian agrees, and embarks on a ter rifying train journey which ends v in an unexpected meeting with Julia, who has lost a leg. Julia has also had a baby, 'whom she named. Lillian after her friend, and who lives away from danger across the border. Julia asks Lillian to keep the baby in New York until she returns there to have her leg seen to. . Lillian never sees Julia again. She is killed by the. Nazis. Nor does she ever find Julia's child. "I enjoyed portraying Lillian Hellman in the film," said Jane Fonda. "Stateline" will be there to cover the debate and analyze . the results; on Friday, January 22, at 7:30 p.m. on Center Channel 4. The Commission, chaired by North Carolina Governor James B. Hunt, is made up of leading Democrats from around the nation. Its final report is expected to have a major impact on the way Democrats choose a presidential candidate.
