14 -THE CAROLINA TIKES Extension Notes SAT., JAN&ARY 33,1382 Some Fathers Avoid Support By CHRIS TIEDEMANN N. C SUU Untvewity About 40 percent of all marriages end in divorce. But someone must still support the children of those marriages. "The father's obligation to support bis children is not : negated by the divorce of the parents," says Dr. Justine Rosier, extension family re source management special ist at North Carolina State University. Although support pay ment amounts are decided in the couple's separation agreement or by the court, there is no guarantee that the father will meet the pay ments. Dr. Rozier says. This despite the fact that it is a felony crime for him not tc pay his child support if so ordered. The problem with trying to enforce this law, Dr. Rozier says, s that remedies of fining or imprisoning a father who won't pay have the neg-' ative effect of reducing his income available for child support "The federal government has developed a locator plan for finding fathers who move out of the community, to avoid paying child support." Dr. Rozier says. And help for North Carolina women' with child support problems is available from the N. C. Division of Human Re-, sources in Rakigh. CALCIUM DEFICIENCY Calcium is very important, for building and maintaining strong bones and teeth. But many older Americana do not get enough calcium in their diets, says Isabella Buckley, extension aging specialist at North Carolina State Uni versity. '.' . : Foods rich in calcium in clude not only the milk and cheese we are all familiar with, but a number of others as well, Miss Buckley says. To supplement calcium in your diet, if necessary, eat ; Bark leafy greens such as kale,;, coliard, . turnip and. mustard greens and seeds, . legumes and nuts, such as sesame seeds, beans and almonds. PONEY MEAT Here are some meat buying tips from Rachel Kinlaw, extension food and nutrition specialist at North Carolina State University. A pound of boneless meat serves four people, a pound of bone-in meat serves two to three and a pound of boney meat serves only one person. When your menu calls for stewing meat, compare the cost of buying a package of cut meat with the cost of . buying a roast and doing the cutting yourself . Firepl ace Cleaning Hints If your fireplace facing has . become stained with smoke and soot oyer the winter, you can remove these stains with simple cleaning methods. : First, says Dr. Glenda Herman, extension housing specialist at North Carolina State University, scrub the' facing with strong soap and water. .' For ;V, brick or rough-, textured areas, you may need to use a stiff brush. Then rinse thoroughly with clear water.-T;;.y: ' "You may need to use a mild acid bleach, such as vinegar or acetic acid," the specialist says. "Again, apply with a brush and rinse with water." ' . For stubborn stains, scrub with a hydrochloric acid and water solution. - "WINN-DIXIE SAVES YOU MORE WITH OUR BUDGET-CUTTING PROGRAM I r u rrry, Nw . i, "! ...... , V ' LOOK FOR THE BRIGHT PRICE BREAKER SYMBOLSYOUR SICN OF SURE SAVINGS!
