Several Fayetteville area church leaders attended
the 195th anniversary of the founding of the
African Methodist Episcopal Church.' Founded by
Richard Allen, a freed slave, in 1787 in
Philadelphia, the denomination now has churches
throughout the world. A highlight was a policy
paper, "The Responsibility of the Church to the
Black Community During This- Economic Hard
ship." The Kings of Harmony presented a concert
recently at John Wesley United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Sands' piano students presented a Sunday
afternoon recital at Mount Hebrew AME Zion
Church. The recital was sponsored by the church's
Life Members and Ladies Chorus.
Some carried their boots and Stetsons for the
rodeo. . .Some swung to thg Fayetteville Sym
phony. . .Some struck the happy medium with the
Valentine version of "Sleeping Beauty". . .others
enjoyed "The Women" well worth seeing at the
Fayetteville Little Theater. . ."Showboat" is still
going on at the Bordeaux Dinner Theater. . .Many
supported their favorite whiz kid at the Quiz Bowl
on Saturday at EJE, .Smith. Semor.:High School
Auditorium. The winning team goes to the regional
Quiz Bowl and the event is sponsored by the
Cumberland County Public Library. . .You can still
see the.exhibits of artists Leonard Dawson, Harvey
Jenkins and James Melvin at the Arsenal House
Gallery. . .Free to all on Feb. 18 was the
Cumberland County String Ensemble at Morgan-
: ton Road School, a concert . sponsored by the
', Friends Of The Orchestra. ' ' ,.
Many are going to see "Medal of Honor Rag" at
Fort Bragg Playhouse. Howard E. Rollins, Jr., is
the acclaimed star of the motion picture "Ragtime"
and Oscar nominee for Best Supporting Actor. He
. appeared on a program at Fayetteville State Univer
sity. ,
A workshop for women themed "Women Of A
: Certain Age" was held Saturday at Fayetteville
i Technical Institute's Cumberland Hall auditorium,
sponsored by . the National Organization for
Women, the North Carolina Council on the Status
of Women and the Fayetteville State Displaced
Homemakers Center.
. Mrs. Katie Foushee displayed an item of interest,
a hand piano, at the Gillespie Street Library. This
I project was sponsored by the AKA Sorority.

Miss Nancy Lee McNair and Sgt. Marvin Lee
' Harrell of Zion, Illinois were married Saturday at 5
p.m., in First Baptist Church. Rev. C.R. Edwards
officiated. i - 1 ... -
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
William V, McNair of Fayetteville, Mr. and Mrs.
Joseph Harrell of Zion, 111., are parents of the
bridegroom.
The bride's parents were hosts for a reception at
'the USO following he ceremony.
The bride is a graduate of Fayetteville State
University. She is currently employed at Reid Ross
High School. The bridegroom is a graduate of Zion
High School in Zion, III., and is currently serving in
the U.S. Army at Fort Bragg..
" The couple will live in Germany.

Select Projects
La Petite Junior Garden Club held its monthly
' meeting at the Forest Hills Recreation Center on
- Friday, February 12. ; ; ( ;
. The Garden Gate was opened by the president,
Kecia Samuel. After the business session, members
were divided into groups. Each group selected a
project and worked ; on one of the following
categbries: How to build a terrarium, classification
of bulbs, identification of herbs, flower show prac
tices and identification of trees. They will continue
, to work on the projects at monthly meetings. ?
The Juniors also rehearsed for a playlet entitled,,
4,Mr. Leeds and the Garden Seeds", to be presented
in the near future. i ;
Members present were: Kecia Samuel, Tiffenee
Jones, Willie Bass, Kathy Mann, Sherry Smith," La
Shawn Bettis, Margaret Webb, Stacie Blanchard 1

Classroom for Young Americans" in Washington,
D. C., an educational program which introduces

ly in the John T. Council region of A.L. Williams
Marketing Organization. Heywood Ward Pugh was
promoted to division manager. Edward Hazley,
(JMilton Spencer, Albert Felton and George Winder
Wete named district managers. Ms. Eloise Mudd,
Ralph Harris, Sr., Percy Jones, Jr., and Elbert
Hare were named sales managers. .
The funeral for Mrs. Carolyn Best of 418
Langdon Street was held Saturday past at John
Wesley ; United Methodist Church. Rev, Albert
Shuler officiated. She is survived by two sons, Her
man Richardson, Jr., of Newark, N.J., arid Robert
E. Richardson of New York.

, The funeral for Walter L, Wiseman, 54, of Bunce
Road, was held Tuesday afternoon at First Baptist
Church. Rev. C.R. Edwards officiated. He had
operated Wiseman's Mortuary since 1970.
. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lenora T. Wiseman;
a daughter, Miss Tryphina Wiseman of the home; a1
stepson, Sgt. Dorian Lee Graham, with the U.S.
Army at Walter Reed Hospital, Washington. D.C.

Rose Garden Club
The Lyon Park vRose Garden Club held its
February meeting at the home of Mrs. Willie Sneed
on Drew Street. The meeting' was opened with the
club song and prayer. The president, Mrs. M.W.
Webb read a Valentine poem. Committee reports
were heard and Mrs. Catherine Shaw talked on
pruning and early spring gardens.
The Garden Council has, a fund project to sell
tickets for a dinner. The club wiJJiave a tea for the
