NCCU Exhibit Features Melvin Carver and T. Suomalainen
A new art exhibit opened
Sunday at North Carolina
Central University's Museum
of Art entitled "Melvin
Carver; 2-D and T.
Suomalainen, 3-D Works'.
The exhibit is an annual
event featuring the work of an
art faculty member and that of
another artist from off cam
pus who is working in a dif
ferent medium. Melvin Carver
is this year's faculty artist.

NCCU's
is director of
Art Department
Visual Communications Pro
gram. One. of his special in
terests is the computer. Use of
the computer in creating art
has taken him to
Massachusetts; Institute of
Technology for a number of
summer sessions. There and at
other computer centers, he has
learned to manipulate the
computer in such a way as to
design, draw, and paint. He
says that the computer pro
vides the artist with infinite
- possibilities; Carver's colorful
works in this show will in
troduce the visitor to some of
the uses of high technology in .
creating aesthetically pleasing
visual art.
-Carver's works have been
exhibited at the Southeastern
Center for Contemporary
Arts, Winston-Salem; the
Horace Williams House,
Chapel Hill; and -in a number
of Durham Art Guild shows.
He is a member of the Durham
Arts Council and the Durham
Art Guild.
Suomalainen is a scuptor
from Walnut Cove a rural
artists'' community near
Winston-Salem. Clay is his
primary medium. In recent
years, Suomalainen has begun
to add objects such as feathers
to the base ceramic work. A
variety of glazes are used in a
painterly manner. The works
on display at NCCU are from
the collection of Ruth and Ira
Julian, a represent over a
decade of the artist's work.
Suomalainen 's work has
been exhibited in many na
tionally known galleries and
museums. Among them are
the High Museum, Atlanta;
the Everson Museum,
Syracuse; and SECCA,
Winston-Salem for a one-man
exhibit in 1981.
The exhibition is free to the
public.

GOD, REVELATION AND AUTHORITY will
be the topic of speeches by noted author and
theologian Carl F.H. Henry, March 19-22. Sessions
will be held Friday through Monday evenings, at 8
p.m., in the Paul Gross Chemistry Building, Duke

Advisory Committee. There is one vacancy in the
category of Unorganized Labor. This term will expire
September 30, 1982. .
