support of the trustees..

ting at North Carolina A&T State University, was
the featured speaker for the Rudolph Jones Lecture
Series at Fayetteville State University on Thursday

Dr. Elizabeth Koontz, a well-known personality
in the state, spoke here on Monday night to the

Approximately 500 educators and others in
terested in education attended the ninth annual con
ference of the North Carolina Association for the
Gifted and Talented Friday and Saturday at
Bordeaux ; Convention Center. ' The workshops
covered ; various needs of gifted and talented
students. Topics included teaching physics, stress
on gifted students as well as the teacher, expressive
writing, legal responsibilities, and activities for
parents. Participants from North Carolina, South
Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee and Alabama
registered.
Ms. Faye Daniels, writer-editor in the Directorate
of Training Developments, IMA, recently served as
a judge for the annual speech contest of the Skyway
Toastmistress Club. She has also served as a judge
for district speech contests ; of International
Toastmaster Clubs and the Junior Chamber of
Commerce. As a contestant, she competed through
successive levels of speed competition of the inter
national level of International Toastmistress Gubs,
the only member from the eastern half .of North
Carolina to reach that level.

Baptist Church in Roanoke, Virginia, was speaker
for the 1 1th hour service at First Baptist on Sunday
morning. He is also a member of the U.S. Army.
The Christian season of Lent in preparation for jj
Easter is being observed in a number of area chur
ches. The forty-day period will continue, through
Easter Sunday.
The word Lent comes from the Old English word
; Lencten, meaning springtime. The observance is
conducted in many churches through special devo
tions, fasting, penance and giving of alms.

Fayetteville State University is sponsoring the
Chestnut Arts Festival essay contest this year.
The contest, for high school students, includes
cash prizes. This year's theme is "the quality of life
in Fayetteville".

the funeral for Mrs; Lena Jones MeKoyj 65, of
Weaver Street' Extension, was held Wednesday
afternoon , at Spring Lake Memorial Missionary
Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, a
son, six sisters and five brothers.
Funeral services for Mrs. Rosa Spearman
Anders, 71 , of 252 Mclver St., were held Thursday
at St. Luke AME Church. She was a retired public
school teacher with 39 years service in Cumberland
and Hoke county schools. She is survived by a
daughter, Mrs. Effie A. Smith of Fayetteville; a
son, Raymond Anders of Memphis Tenn.; two
sisters, Mrs. Armelia Spearman of Hope Mills and
Mrs. Eunice Lomax Of Durham; a brother, David
Spearman of Durham,
Azalea Garden Club
The Azalea Garden Club met with Mrs. Virgie
Davis at the J.J. Henderson Towers on March 13.
She served a delicious repast in grand style.
Mrs. Rebecca Daye opened the Garden Gate with
; a song and prayer. The reading was from Henry D.
Thoreau. I am going to plant a spring garden this
year only its a garden he never heard of! The in
structions were; First plant three rows of peas:
perserverance, politeness and prayer; next to them
plant three rows of squash: squash gossip, squash .
indifference and squash selfishness; then plant three
row of lettuce: let us be loyal, let us be truthful and
, let us love one another; and no garden is complete
without turnips: turn up for work, turn up for
church, turn up with a smile.
Wouldn't this world be more like the Garden of
Eden if we planted seed like these?
The president, Miss Mary Baines, presided over
'the meeting during which the following topics were
discussed: a visit to the Botanical Garden in Chapel '
Hill; plans for taking a trip; workshop at Duke ,
Memorial Methodist Church; plans for North
Carolina Master Gardeners; sales for a money mak
ing project for the spring; Queens Contest for city
wide gardeners; and the Msay Flower Show at J.J.
