AKA's Break Ground For $1,000,000 National Headquarters CHICAGO ' Ground was broken at' "S7th Street and Stony; Island Avenue recently, for the $1,000,000 na tional headquarters of designed . by John Alpha ' Kappa Alpha,! Moutoussamy, partner B. Bryant of Houston,; Texas, president-elect,-accepted a symbolic deed to the land. I he building was Inc., oldest and largest organization of black' college women, , . The ceremony was witnessed by more than 200 persons, including four former presidents, of the 60,000 member, service organization. Dr. Barbara Kv Phillips Of Winston Salem, NC, national president, said the first 10,000 foot portion of the headquarters will be completed: for the organization's 75th an-' niversary, in 1983. A se cond 10,000 foot section will be completed later. The - site, which overlooks Jackson Park and the Museum of. Science and Industry, was purchased from the city of Chicago. Dr. Lenora T. Cartright,; Commissioner of Human Services, represented the city at1 the groundbreaking. She; praised Alpha Kappa: Alpha for its human ser vices programs, and said the new building will enhance Chicago's im-: portance as a head-; quarters city. Dr. Faye' in the architectural firm of Dubin, Dubin, Moutoussamy . and Black. It will be built by Bush Construction Com pany, a minority con tractor. A committee of of ficers headed by Dr. Margaret B. Rdach of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, will oversee con struction. Mrs. Carey B. Preston, former ex ecutive director, wiir represent the organiza-, tion in on-site supervi sion, according to Dr. Earnestine G. McNealey, executive director. Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded in 1908 at, Howard University in; Washington, D.C., as a college sorority. It has grown to include 600' chapters in the U.S. and; abroad, and conduct's; service projects in-' eluding, business and government internships,' domestic travel grants, . scholarships, a Jobs Corps center, health : research grants and sup-; ports colleges and civil; rights organizations.
