Three Durham artists are
featured in the exhibition
"Forty North Carolina Ar
tists", which opens May 2 in
the Collectors Gallery of the
North Carolina Museum of
Art in Raleigh. The exhibition,
which continues through June
1 3, includes works commis
sioned by Philip Morris Incor
porated for permanent display
in its new cigarette manufac
turing facility in Cabarrus
County.
The , three Durham artists
selected by the Museum staff

for the project are Tom Link,
Edith London and Vernon
Pratt.
The public is invited to a
reception for the artists from 4
to 6 p.m.. May 2 in the Collec
tors Gallery.
According to museum
Director Dr. Edgar Peters
Bowron, the show represents
thelargest number of commis
sioned works by North
Carolina artists eyer to appear
in the museum. "We're very
excited about this show," he
said, "not only because of its
artistic significance, but
because it demonstrates how
the museum is. working with
businesses for North Carolina
artists."
Selected for the project by
he Museum staff, each artist
executed a 24" x 24" painrtng
with subjects ranging from
landscapes and human figures
to non-representational art.
After the exhibition at the
museum, the paintings will be
assembled and hung to form
one large mural in the ad
ministrative area of the new

Facility near Concord. The
facility, l he company's first in
North Carolina, is scheduled
tcbepiu operating in early
1983.
The Collectors Gallery ex
hibition will be the only public
showing of these works before
they are installed at the Philip
Morris facility.
Philip Morris has a long and
distinguished history of
patronage for the arts, and the
new facility eventually will in
clude other exhibitions of arts
and crafts by North Caroli
nians. All the arts and crafts
for the new facility, including
thhe forty paintings in this ex
hibition, were planned by
Chermayeff and Geismar
Associates, a design firm
located' in New York.
The Museum staff suggested
forty North Carolina artists
from all geographical areas of
the state for the facility's only
installation of paintings. Last
November, each artist was
given a 24" x 24" canvas on
which to produce a work tor
the project with "North
Carolina" as the theme. The
result was a varied range of
subjects and styles in oil,
acrylic, and mixed media.
For example, "Blues off
Fort Macon Jetty" by
Winston-Salem artist Robert
Dance is a scene of four
fishermen on a rocky jetty, so
realistically executed that the
light appears to come from
within the canvas. By contrast,
"Make Make 4" by
Clarence Morgan of Green
ville is a non-representational
piece in collage and oil, with
bright colors that seem to
dance against a dark
background.
The galleries of the N.C.
Museum of Art are at 107 E.
Morgan St., in downtown
Raleigh. Hours are 10 a.m.-5
p.m. Tuesdays through Satur
days and 2-6 p.m. Sundays.

Two New Budweiser Great
Kings Set for Unveiling at
World's Fair
KNOXyiLLE, TENN.
Two new kings for the
Budweiser Great Kings of
Africa series will be unveiled
at the 1982 World's Fair in
Knoxville, Tennessee, it was
announced recently by Henry
H. Brownn, vice president of
market development and af
fairs, Anheuser-Busch, Inc.
The World's Fair opens in
May.
The new kings will be: King
Benanzin Hossu Bowelle, King
of Dahomey, who was 'known
as "The King Shark" which
symbolized strength and
wisdom; and King Samory
Tourc, King of Bissandugu
who was known as "The Black
Napoleon of the Sudan'.'.
They will become part of a
widely acclaimed art collection
that has been viewed' by over
ten million people. The two .
new kings will expand the col
lection to sixteen.
The Budweiser Great Kings
of Africa scries will be on
display throughout the dura
tion of the World's Fair at the
African ' American Exhibit.
However, because of the
widespread demand for the
scries across the country, the
series will be divided so that
half will be shown at the Fair
while the other half will con
tinue 'touring.
The, African American Ex
hibit will be located in the
Lifestyle and Technology
Center at the World's Fair.
The exhibit will highlight the
achievements and contribu
tions of black Americans as
well as the Great Kings.
The theme of the 1982
World's Fair is "Energy Turns,
the World". The theme of the
African American Exhibit is
"African America, Thet
Original Energy Source".
Atiheuser Busch, the
world's leading brewer, will
also have the famous
Budweiser Clydesdales as a
permanent fixture to the Fair.
The company will also sponsor
a " Budweiser Bar-B-
QBluegrass" Entertainment
