. A Family Tribute for Mrs. Davetter B. Shepard
was held in the Fellowship Hall at First Baptist
Church on Saturday evening. Hersister, Dr. Callie.
' B. Coaxura, presided. Reflections were delivered by
Dr. C.R. Edwards. '

McManus, Mrs. Mildred Frye and Aljerin Butler.
Mrs. Shepard is a native of Clinton and is mar
ried to William E. Shepard of Thomasville: They
have two sons, Harvey Monk of Washington, D.C. ,
and Gerald Monk of Lumberton. ,
Her church, civic and professional activities in
clude several, memberships; First Baptist Church,
International Toastmistress Clubs," and Chestnut
Hills Community organization, . ;
Prior to her ; enrollment at Fayetteville i State
University in January, 1978, she completed a satis
fying "career as a federal employee at Fort Bragg.
So, on May 8, she was honored for completion of
academic requirements for the Bachelor of Science
degree in psychology at Fayetteville State Universi
ty. The degree was awarded on Sunday, May 9, at
the Cumberland County Memorial Arena.
Friends and relatives gathered for the tribute
from around the state, as well as out of state.
The chancellor, administration, Department of
Social and Behavioral Sciences, faculty and staff
; Mrs. Lane holds membership in several organiza
tions. Among these are the N.Cf Council for the
Social Studies, the College'and University Faculty
Assembly of N.C., the Women's Society of Chns
, tian Service, Gamma Upsilon Zeta Chapter of Zeta
Phi Beta SororityESU Women's Club, Fayetteville -Chapter
of Links, the Good Aces.Bridge Club, the
North Hill Garden Club and the ; Fayetteville
Civitan Club. Mrs. Lane is an active member of
John Wesley United Methodist Church; X ,
Dr. Rodney A. Burrows offered the "Tribute,"
and Dr.; Charles Lyons presented the plaque. The
affair was held in the Rudolph Jones Student'
Center at Fayetteville State University on May 6;
Mrs. Lane was married to the late W.E. Lane;
she has one son, Ronald E. Lane. - -...

Center held open
A workshop on the basics of food freezing was
sponsored Thursday by the Cumberland County
Agricultural Extension Service. The workshop
began at 10 a.m. through noon at the County Office
Building on U.S." 301-S, Participants practiced
methods of freezing fruits and vegetables.
Six students at Reid Ross High School recently
attended the annual HOSA Convention in Winston
Salem. They are Venee James, Bridget Jenkins,
Lillian Gerald, Ruth Cooper, Veronica Manns and
Jackie Bishop.

the engagement of their daughter, Betty Sue, to An
thony DeMonte Elliott of Durham. .
The prospective bridegroom is the son of the late
Robert and Mrs. Kathleen Elliott. He is a graduate
of North Carolina Central University in Durham.
He is employed with Hotel Europa in Chapel Hill.

V Thrifty Service Club in her home on Atlantic Street,
May 8, in observance of her birthdate. After devo
tion led by Rev. Dorothy Glover, the president,
Mrs. Aline Davis presided over reports from
various committees. Mrs. Mary Vanhook, the trip
C chairman, said that all is in readiness for the trip to
the World's Fair June-1 1-13. An announcement will
be made later on the time of departure. . . '
. ' The highlight of the meeting was to honor all
i mothers present and absent. A special Mother's
Day sohg was sung to all mothers. Lovely gifts were
