- Crusader Club
The Crusader Club met June 26 at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Willie Edwards on Fayetteville Street.
After devotion led by Mrs. Tempie Young, Mrs.
Minnie Jones and Doman Farrington, the prcsi-
agenda. - Discussed was the trip to Williamsburg,
Virginia on August 28.
from Livingstone College in Salisbury, met with the
group and gave some enlightening remarks for the
continued growth of the club.
Other members present were Mrs. Julia Moore,
Mrs. Reefus Richmond, Mrs. Sally Williamson,

Hayestown Seniors
The Senior Citizens of Hayeslown met June 21 in
the Hayeslown Community Center. The meeting
was opened by the president. Mrs Roberta Allen .
and devotions were led by Mrs. Odessa Flake. Plans
were made for the annual program in August.;
Mrs. Virginia F.nulehart visited the club and gave
some highlights for senior citizens. ,
Other members present were: Mmes. Delia Hub
bard, Alice Carrick. Annie Allen,. Annie Daye, An
nie Mac Webb: Messers. Jesse Fcrrell and Henry
Hubbard.
Oak Grove Floral Board
The Oak Grove Free Will Baptist Church Floral
Board met at the church Sunday afternoon in the -fellowship
hall.
The meeting was opened with prayer by Mrs.
Lucille Sanders and each member repealed Bible
verses. Mrs. Willier McKeithan. president, presid
ed. All monthly committee reports were presented.
The Boards Anniversary will re ooserveci at o p.m.
on Sunday July 25 when the speaker will be Rev.
Crews, associate minister of Fisher Memorial
United Holy Church. Members agreed to sit as a
group, in uniform, during the morning worship ser
vice on that date also.
Mrs. Janie Watson presented all members having
birth dates from January through June a Jade plant
to get their Jade gardens started. One member,
Mrs. Lucy Taylor was reinstated and Mrs. Delois
Rogers became a new member.
The hostesses, Mrs. Roberta Jones, Rev. Jessie
Brown, Mrs. Willie N. McCoy and Mrs. Janice
Watson, served dinner to the members and the
pastor, Rev. Z.D. Harris,
Other members present were: Mesdames Essie
Whitely, Magnolia Williams, T. Hall, Emma
Douglas, Josanna Fryar, Helen Solomon, Annie L.
Smith, Carrie McCrae, Ovella Lumpkin, Gladis
Corbitt, Sersie Griffin and Jessie S. McCray.
Mrs. McCrae thanked the hostesses and Mrs.
Williams blessed the offering. ':
The next meeting is scheduled for September 26
at the home of Mrs. Estella McCrae, 2403 Anacosta

Park Rose Garden Club
The Park Rose Garden Club met at the home of
Mrs. Mattie R. Canty on MoreUnd Avenue, on
Saturday, June 19. The meeting was opened by the
vice president, Mrs. Margaret MiUigan, with prayer

Miss McNeill is also the club's delegate to the
August convention in Raleigh.
Officers for 1982-83 were elected and a new .
member joined, Mrs. Mary Sue Coward.
Other members present were: Mesdames

Dorothy Blakeney, Margaret MiUigan, Sophronia
Green, Lois Cozart, Hallie Crews, Willie Sneed and
Louise Banks..
Mrs. Canty served dinner.
The next meeting will be in September. Time and
place will be announced later.
Durham Blossom Club
On Tuesday night, June 22, Mrs. Cornetta
Williams hosted the West Durham Blossom Garden -Club
at her home on Cecil Street. ; t
The Garden Gate was opened by Mrs. Margaret
Fuller after which a business session was presided
over by the president. Committee reports were
heard; the coordinators reported on the progress of
the junior club: progress on the scrapbook and
yearbook; birthday gifts were presented to those
bom in June and July; explanation of material sent
concerning the convention to be held in Raleigh in

ficers with Mrs. Mary Horton giving the charge and
discussion of a closing picnic. ;
Dinner was served. .

Union Community Club
The Union Community Club met Thursday
night, June 17, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Willie
Covington on Obie Drive. The meeting was opened
with prayer by the president, W.W. Sellers,
Business was discussed and plans Were made for a
summer picnic. Meetings adjourned until
September.
Members present were: Mr. and Mrs. W.W.
Sellers, Ms. Alcnc Davis, Mr. and Mrs, Theodore
Speight, Mrs.; Annie L, Ashford, Ms. Jackie
Futrcll. Mr. and Mrs, Willie Gerald, Robert

j. Mr. and Mrs. K.J. Mason, Sr. hosted a dinner
party on their lawn recently in honor of their niece,
Ms. Deborah McDowell, who graduated from
North Carolina Central University this year with a
bachelor's degree in Business Administration, v
Keiauvcs ana approximately 30 friends of Ms.
. McDowell attended. Out of town guests were: Mrs.
Hattie Harrison, Deborah's grandmother; Henry
; McDowell, Sr Mrs. Hattie Lucas, an aunt; and
; Mrs. Karen Rcid, a cousin.
Ms. Mcrvell is the daughter of Mrs. Ruth C,
McDctivell of Durham. She is employed at Lincoln
Community Health Center.
Thrifty Service Club :
The Thrifty Service Club met in the home of Mrs.
Mattie Jones, June 19, in observance of Mrs. Mat- ;
tie Jones and Mrs. Willie M. Jones' birthdates. "

. Participants who attended the World's Fair told
of happy experiences during the trip. The trip to
Atlantic City, N.J., leaves August 5 and returns

Mmes. Mattie and Willie M. Jones received love
ly gifts with their birthday money. A repast was
served. Mrs. Irene Hall thanked the hostesses..

A Musical Closing
The YWCA piano classes and After School Day
Care services ended their 1981-82 sessions' with a ,
program and recital at the YWCA on June 10.
The After School children presented songs in the v
sign language for the deaf, led by James Thomas.
Beth Stutts gave an instrumental selection on the
recorder: all accompanied by Mrs. Jan Thomason
at the piano Mrs. Thomason is the after school
care teacher.
s The following students played their favorite -selections
on the piano in this order: Tangela Gray,'
Graded. Bethesda School; Luis Albornoz. Grade 8,
Githens Junior High School, also from Caracas.
Venezuela, South America; Vaughan Parker,
Grade 10, Jordan High; Saundra Steele, Grade, 12,
Hillside High School. Mrs. Etheleen M. Alston is
the piano teacher.
The parents, friends and participants were
''greeted and welcomed by Mrs. Marie Torain, pro-,
gram director of the YWCA.
A pot luck supper feast followed.

Mrs. Ruth McDowell of Durham attended an
afternoon reception for keniors, parents and faculty
of the North Carolina School of the Arts on Friday,
May 28, at the residence of Chancellor Robert
Suderburg in Winston-Salem.
She then attended the commencement concert
Friday night held in Crawford Hall and Commence
ment exercises on Saturday.
Mrs. McDowell is the mother of Henry
McDowell who graduated and was awarded a y
bachelor of music degree. He was organist for the
grand marches.
Other commencement activities which Mrs.
McDowell attended included a luncheon and church
service on Sunday morning.
