2 THE CAROLINA TISESpSAJlrtfeAj. JUNE 28, 18S2 I LOOKED AND I SAW ; His Far-Reaching Wisdom, HighandlLow . By Rev. C. B. Stone The thoughts of our Lord are far too powerful for men of knowledge to comprehend with much , r accuracy. High are the ways of the Lord above our ways,' yet, His thoughts are far-reaching to the human family of the earth. We must ; alwiys remember that the Lord has positioned His guiding Spirit among the human family. This means that He has descended upon his directions through His ' Divine Revelations. His Revelations provide us with key benefits if we would seek Him in spirit and ; truth. The spirit is capable, without error, of revealing. to us exactly where we need to go. Wisdom does not have to depend on knowledge as we see it to secure truths on a particular matter. Wisdom does not need, nor have to settle for any secondary position regarding knowledgeable men. Wisdom lies eternally within the framework of the . Godhead without question. Therefore, wisdom is ' too high for the foolish to obtain without self denial. In other words, men must take a lower posi tion than wisdom in order to seek any person of the Godhead who is wisdom. Furthermore, wisdom represents, the Supreme position on intelligence in volving success among the human family of the earth. It is not the .primary purpose of the Godhead to be positioned somewhere in isolation void of help ing us. If the attitude of the Godhead were directly . against men, to whom could we, go for relief in times of, need? When the attitudes of men are kindled against righteousness, the Godhead is com mitted to provide help for those who seek the truth. He who hath ears to hear, let him hear. CARD OF THANKS 0. SMOTHERSON 23rd - legislative district surprised ' Kenneth . B. Spaulding more than anyone else. ' Not; only, did , he retain ; the legislative seat he's held for the past four years, . but he also led the ticket . in the four-mart race for t the three seats ' in this - district. Spaulding polled more than 18,000 votes. "1 1 think the vote " reflects the willingness of . the community to work together," Spaulding- , . said shortly after results ' were announced at elec-, tion headquarters downtown. "My voting ' record shows that we've -worked for the whole , community, and I'm glad the voters allowed me to continue the ser vice.' Durham County voters also returned two other incumbent legislators to the state house in Tuesday's elec-" tions. W. Paul Pulley, who will begin his third term, came in second " place with about 14,000 votes,' while George Miller, Jr., placed third with about 13,000 votes. A.J. Howard Cle- with just a little over 9,000 votes. : A comparison of elec tion returns indicate that i if Clement had polled an average of - about 400 more votes in each of the city's ten predominantly black precincts, he would have placed third, upsetting Miller. However, because Cle ment ran without the en dorsement of the Durham Committee on the Affairs of Black Peo ple, he got only about . 2,200 votes in those ten precincts. Spaulding got the Committee's en dorsement. The Com mittee is Durham's prin cipal black ; political organization. f i , This is the second race in which Spaulding has received the Committee's endorsement rather than Clement, and each time the endorsement made a. major ditterence in trie votes Clement got in the ; black community. Spaulding, however, also ran strong in Spaulding's vote against a three cent gas tax hike,' nrnnnced bv GOV. Jim Hunt and supported by most of the durham delegation, would hurt his reelection chances. ' Voters evidently thought , that he did a good job. ; " , ; While- neither would state it in uncertain terms publicly, the house race was viewed by many as a battle between Spaulding and Clement, as it turned out, Clement could only : muster 9,126 votes, over 4,000 votes beyond the race's third , place can didate. Clement and Spaulding, though both black, seldom agreed on issues that came before the House during the last term with Clement often speaking publicly against Spaulding's positions. The-' race reset the stage from a political battle originally set in the general elections of 1978. That : year, A.J; Howard Clement III sought to retain the seat the ' appointment to U.S. At torney of H.M. . Michaux. " t But - ' Kenneth: Spaulding decided to run also, and he, too, receiv- ed the backing of the politically powerful) Durham Committee on , the Affairs of Blade Peo-i pie, the famous,' "double j endorsement". , Spaulding won along) with the two white can-! didates that ran sue-! cessfully in 1978 and .1980, Paul Pulley and; George Miller. Clements sought the committee's endorse ment this year but ..Spaulding won that fight again. y . . The three incumbents j ran mostly on their ; records. Except for a few issues they all agree and : vote as a bloc or delega tion. Clement, on the other hand, ran on as record as private citizens and through certain com munity organizations' such as the Durham; Chamber of Commerce. ' predominantly areas.
