FOE DISEASE
AHan R. Magie, Ph.D., M.P.H.
Legionnaire's disease.'Toxier ,
shock syndrome. Fort Bragg
fever. Infant botulism New
diseases, old diseases with
new faces, or both?
These, along with a number !
of other newly labeled dis
eases, have suddenly burst''
'on us. '-.;.
They all seem to have one
thing in common they have'
taken advantage of the way
we live and of the changes
man makes in his environ
ment. A look at history provides
us with some clear illustra
tions of this phenomenon. The
black plague of the Middle
Ages resulted from the close
relationship between man and
the domesticated rat, The ro
dents depended on man for
shelter, .; food, and , water
which were unwittingly pro
videdand fleas from sick
ened rats made the short -jump
onto the nearest warm
body.
Even today Chagas' disease
in the Americas an incurable
condition reaches : man
through an insect that thrives
in human dwellings, sucking
blood from: the inhabitants
and living in cracks and dark
recesses 1 Urban yellow fever
and other mosquito-carried
problems continue because
we surround ourselves with
water-holding plants, ponds,
and cast-off containers like
automobile tires and tin cans. '
Unfortunately man's life-'
style and the modern conven
iences he enjoys have con
tinued this sad legacy. Let's
look at a few examples.
' Mothers, in an effort to use
a healthier sweetener for
2 r (U
Sat" ' y &
baby's cereal, choose 'honey
over granulated sugar. The
heat-resistant spores of the
botulism organism find a fa
vorable home in the baby's
intestinal tract. Multiplying
there, they produce the dead
ly toxin which blocks the
breathing process. A signifi
cant number of so-called "crib
deaths" have been the result '
of botulism. '
Legionnaire's disease, Fort
Bragg fever, and several oth
er pneumonia-like infections
result from humans breathing
air pulled through cooling .
towers in which microorgan
isms thrive. -
Women using tampons have
unknowingly provided an
other home for staph bacter
ia, which produce a tissue
destroying toxin sometimes
resulting in death.
All of these new diseases ,
: have forced us to think about
our role in spreading disease.
We must become more con
scious about the consequences
of the change we make in our
environment. It is inevitable
that bacteria and viruses will
change form and continually
affect us differently, but it is
our responsibility to avoid
making changes that ' might
hasten this natural process.
