Spaulding Day at White Reck
' White Rock Baptist Church, 3400 Fayettcville
St., will observe the 30th Annual Charles Clinton
Spaulding Scholarship Day, Sunday, July 25 at
, 10:55 a.m. John S. Stewart, former-Durham
Mayor Pro-Tem and former president of Mutual
Savings and Loan Association, will speak.
-The late C. C. Spaulding was president of North
Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company,
Mechanics and Farmers Bank, and Mutual Savings
and Loan Association. He was also a deacon and
trustee of White Rock Baptist Church and be
quested to the church a sum of money which was
used to establish a scholarship fund in 1952. Many,
students have been recipients and benefitted from
this fund during the past 30 years. r's'tr
Stewart, a trustee of White Rock Baptist Church,
was a protege of Mr. Spaulding and succeeded him"
as president of Mutual Savings.
He was a member of City Council for 15 years
and served as Mayor Pro-Tem two years. He was
chairman of the Committee on the Affairs of Black
People and served as a director of Duke Power
Company, Mechanics and Farmers Bank and North
Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company.
He is vice-chairman, Durham Hospital Corpora
tion and John Avery Boys Club. He has served as
chairman of the Board of Trustees of North
Carolina A&T State University.

Church. She has taught Cosmetology in the public

president of the B.T.U., Woman's Day Captain
and Mother of the Year in 1970.
She is married to Dr. Edward L. Howard, pastor
of Piney Grove. They are the parents of four

7th Versatile Crusaders Anniversary ;
The Versatile Crusaders of " Mount Calvary
United Church of Christ, 1715 Athens Ave., will
celebrate its 7th Anniversary, Sunday, July 25 at 3

. The nationally acclaimed St. Mark's AME Zion
Church Choir will perform in concert, Sunday, July
25 at 4 p.m. The 50-plus member choir has made,
many guests appearances around the country.
Their guest' appearances include Duke Chapel;
Mobile, Alabama; Ohio; Chicago; Pensacola, Fla.;
New York; Miami, Fla. and Baltimore, Md. among
others.
