1W . by Urn Walter - t CcyrtoW 19aZTSI Syndicate ftahirei SATURDAY, JULY 24. 1982-THE CAROLINA TIMt'S-5 Dry-Docked By Fame, Claims Redding "Once a lady finds out who I am," laments eighteen-year-old Otis Redding III of The Reddings, "they come on stronger, and I hate that. I try' to keep them from knowing who I am.' ; ' '. ' .. '. .' ..' As a result, the Saggittarian muses, he hasn't been meeting any interesting girls lately., "They always find out," he ex plains; "then they change. It's really rough.. ..and lonely." Redding adds, "most of the time,,I pretend I don't know ' what they're doing, but the joke is on them, I won't keep up a relationship with a girl after she changes.' He says he devotes most of his time, energy and interest to the trio, however. Redding is the youngest member of the trio and plays the guitar. He also writes and composes, as does older brother Dexter (a 21-year-old Libra) and cousin Marie Lockett (a 24-year-old Libra). The family own a comfortable ranch in Macon, Georgia, where Otis will beat loneliness by taking a long walk or play ing his stereo loudly. "On the road, I play my guitar. I just climb into my music to get away from the blues." In a review I wrote for Billboard Magazine last year, I laud ed the Reddings for their dynamic stage show. It was this year's album, "Steamin Hot", however, that established their solid professional recording credentials. This time around they also co-produced. The trio wrote aft of the material except for a tribute cover of thcif father's classic "(SttM, On) The Dock Of The Bay". : When it first came up, there was concent that people wouW ! think we were exploiting my father's music," says Otis, "but actuary, my Mom wanted us to" do it as a tribute. Now that it's caught or, I think the entire album speaks for itself." 7jJm BaAsiiMK iiwidrnttaUv lit aUn the frrrmn's manaeer. "She wasn't active in my father's careerbut she had hef eyes f open. For a housewife, she learned a lot, she's pretty sharp. If we can't do something, she knows how to go out and get so meone who can." Redding notes that the trio has created vir tually all of their own choreography without assistance from anyone,, not even Mom. - Elektra Asylum's Brace Lundvall has backed up his first , all-muscle Jazz line-up (which included Charlie Parker, Fred dy Hubbard, John McLaughlin and Lee Ritenour) on the new , ElektraMusician label with a second package of eight equal ly stunning artists. - The new package boasts Billy Cogham, Woody Shaw, Bud Powell, Max Roach & Sonny Collins, Dexter Gordon, Mose Allison, Bobby McFerrin and David Sancious. Roach and Collins are doing never-before-released material from the late Clifford Brown, but all eight albums are impor tant, bright and colorful, v "I heard sounds in my head as a kid," New Jersey-born Sancious tells me. "I used to dream of a keyboard where I , could bend notes and get a vibrato....l've got that in a syn thesizer, which plays a big role in my music." He's a ten-year veteran of session work, dating to early associations with Bruce Springsteen. ; "On 'The Bridge , I wanted to go as deeply into myself as I ' possibly could. The album takes you to beautiful places you ' might hot have experienced before. If I can move someone deeply in a healthy, vibrant way, then I've performed a wor ' thwhile service." All eight of these albums provide that ser vice. , Did you know Cameo's Charlie Singleton designs and sews 'his own clothes and plays 41 instruments? And I thought Ray Parker did it all.. ..Jerry Butler calls to say he's working with Crusader Stix Hooper on a Hooper album.... Atlantic has re ' released Ph,D's "I Won't Let You Down" in a new version after Us chart-topping success in Europe....In a twist on the little old lady in the department store booth, the Atlantic City Playboy Casino v has a new casino information guide in pocketbook size and a staff of information bunnies to pass them out..TropicanaLas Vegas has employees promoting - "55 Smiles an Hour". It would make a nice world-wide policy, don't you think?. ..,Harry Mills dead at .68, 1 saw the brothers perform many times these last few years; the trend setters always held their own against young pups like Ross and Warwick, Sinatra and Paul Anka."
