SATURDAY, JULY 31, 1982-THE CAROLINA TIMES-3 Shadows Of History Cast Over N.C. Golfers By Glenn Mays N.C. Travel Editor When you tee it up in North Carolina you are surrounded not only by beauty but also the .shadows of history. ; Not only is that the history of the game itself but more significantly in the-shadows of the history of the nation and the world. ; Along North Carolina's coastal area there are many courses which provide a Challenge for any golfer from weekend duffer to tour ing pro. .At Duck Woods Golf Club a tee shot could far exceed the . length of the first manned powered flight which is just a chip shot away at Kitty Hawk. Just a five-iron to the south at Sea Scape Golf Club you could sink a putt near the site where the English first tried in 1584 to put down roots in the New World in what has become known as the "lost colony" because of its mysterious disappearance. Take a drive south to New Bern for such courses as Fair-. field Harbour or River Bend where Tryon Palace, the tome of the iast royal Governor of North Carolina, graces the banks of the Trent and Neuse rivers.. A pitching wedge to the east is Pine Knoll Shores and Bogue Banks where a golfer usually keeps a watchful eye out for pirates in Beaufort, Morehead City and Atlantic Beach, areas once a haven of that infamous pirate Blackbeard. Teeing off to the south again, the eolfer reaches Sunday August 1, 1882 WFMY WPTF WTVD WUNC WTTG WRAL WTBS WGHP CH. 2 CH.28 CH. 11 CH. 4 CH. 5 CH. 5 CH. 17 CH. 8 I Cable 11 1 Cable 3 Cable 6 Cable 9 Cable 10 Cable 12 Cable 13 00 Kenneth Jerry Mighty Mouse Jimmy World James Dr.D. Historic Wilmington, once the world's largest shipping port for cot ton, stands gracefully along the Cape Fear too, as if wat ching over the USS North Carolina, America's premier battleship in World War II. She is permanently berthed on the Cape Fear, sharing her history with thousands of visitors annually. Just a three-iron to the west would put you in the heart of the golfing capital of the world Pinehurst. Pinehurst No. 2, its most famous course, sweeps around the long leaf pines and over the rolling san dhills right by the center of the game's greatest legends the World Golf Hall of Fame. Another tee shot to the north puts you in the state capital of Raleigh, where such noted courses as North Ridge, MacGregor Downs and others grace the surroundings of this thriving Piedmont city which, has been the seat of state government since the late 18th century. To the west, perhaps a six iron or so, is .Greensboro, home of the Greater Greensboro Open. Forest Oaks, Sedgefield and Irving Park country clubs lie within the shadow of Guilford Cour thouse National Military Park, where one of the decisive battles of the American Revolution occur red 200 years ago. Just a pitching wedge to the :west is Winston-Salem where Tanglewood and other pic turesque golf clubs offer a challenge and beauty to golfers. All are just a short putt away from Old Salem, an early Moravian settlement in North Carolina, which has been significant in the state's history. A four wood , to the southwest is Charlotte, where such noted courses as Quail Hollow and Myers Park roll Jong within a chip shot of the first gold mine in America the Reed Gold Mine where gold "nuggets"weighing as much as 28 pounds were discovered in the early 1800's. Teeing off again to the west, a driver puts you in the moun tains the Appalachians in cluding the Great Smokies, Blue Ridge and other smaller ranges. Golf courses are tuck ed away in the valleys and others soar to almost a mile high. Their fairways roll across (and which was once a hunting ground of such, famous frontiersmen as Daniel Boone and John Sevier. Golfing in the mountains can be awe inspiring as the vistas are varied and beautiful. It is even possible to play in the shadows of the oldest mountain in the world Grandfather Mountain. Geologists say it is billion years old. No matter where you tee it up in North Carolina? it is tru ly 'an 'experience to remember. From that first drive to the; final putt, it's like playing dut of a page in history. Barbara Proctor An Unlimited Success Ms. Barbara Proctor, the tremendously successful as agency whiz, declares that she made it because she is black ' and a woman, in the August Etyony. Ms. Proctor is president and founder of the natbn's second largest black-owned advertis ing agency: Proctor and Gard ner. She says, "Racism and. sexism were only challenges to me, not obstacles... to view every circumstance in one's life in terms of those two small biological characteristics is very self-limiting." Her multi- million dollar, Chicago-based agency provides black con sumer market concepts to clients such as Kraft, Alberto Culver, Sears and Jewel Food Stores.. Ms. Proctdr says her greatest problem was getting over the fear of taking risks. Once she jiurdled that barnef she was independent enougn. to go after her goal without male support because she says, "...I never bought the myth that men are supposed to take care of women" For constipation relief tomorrow reach for EX-LAX tonight Ex-Lax helps restore your system's own natural rhythm overnight.
