The food is prepared by many of this historic seaside town's residents who have cooked, baked, sauteed, stew ed or whatever these strange concoctions. However, a few of the cooks come from other coastal cities and towns. Even a few landlubbers get in on the act, like newspaper columnist Jerry Bledsoe, well known for his left-handed ' whelk chowder. During the tasting, the cooks gladly share some of their "secrets" about how they prepared the dishes. Ike O'Neal Of nearby Newport, who prepared a mussel stew for the 1981 event, confided to one "taster" that "the secret is to cook it twice."; 'A,:' vaM : Those who come to sample the varied offering of strange food with strange names have their favorites according to their tastes. But one first -time taster at the 1981 exhibition summed up the feelings - or tastes of many when he said, "The food looks sort of strange but it'sgood." A $2 fee will be charged to sample the seafood morsels.
