Unity Broadcasting Network Purchases New York's WWRL
Unity Broadcasting Net
work New York, Inc., an
nounced that it has completed
me purcnase or WWRL the
only full time AM radio sta
tion innew York City serving
the black community.
The acquisition, according
to Eugene D. Jackson, Unity
Broadcasting president, marks
the third major radio sttion ac
quisition by Unity Brodcasting
within two years.
Jackson said that Unity
Broadcasting had assumed ;
total management respon
sibility at WWR1, which has its
studios in Woodside, Queens.
. The purchase of WWRL,
'approved by the Federal Com
munications Commission, was
made from the United Negro
College Fund. The station was
donated to the Fund by
Viacom International.
The proceeds of the sale to
Unity Broadcasting will be us
ed to assist the College Fund's
41 private, predominently
black colleges and universities.

The purchase of WWRL
follows the acquisition by the
company of two leading St.
Louis, Missouri radio stations.
In November, 1981, the
company acquired KATZ-AM
and WZEN-FM from Laclede
Radio, Inc. In 1980, Unity
purchased two top radio sta
tions in'
Philadelphia-WDAS-AM
and FM. ....

founded 55 years ago, "is an
established and highly
respected station that has con
sistently demonstrated leader
ship in providing quality news,
information and entertain
ment programming to its black
listeners throughout the New
York Metropolitan area."

novative programming that is
sensitive to the needs and con
cerns of black New Yorkers,
WWRL will become an even
greater educational and enter
tainment force in New York's
communication's industry,"
Jackson said.
Unity Broadcasting Net
work, Inc., with headquarters
at 10 Columbus Circle in
Manhattan, is also the parent
company of the National
Black Network (NBN); and
Queens Inner Unity Cable
Systems, which is a joint ven
ture between Unity Broad
casting and Inner City Broad
casting Corporation. Queens
Inner Unity has been
designated to negotiate with
the City of New York for a
cable franchise in the Borough
of Queens, this is one of the
larger cable franchises to be
awarded in the U.S. to date.

Celebration Set For
September 25 & 26
The 9th annual Street Arts
Celebration, set for Saturday
September 25 from 10 a.m. to
5 p.m., and Sunday September
26 from 1 to 5 p.m., is fast ap
poraching. There will be arts
and crafts displays, dancers
and musicians such as the
John Santa Band,
Honeysuckle, Barry Lynn
Hayes, Drew Kelner, Stoney
Creek doggers, Majic, the
Napred Folk Ensemble and In
ternational Dancers, Tueting
and Guild, Light,- the Bardeh
Brothers, the Obie Family
gospel singers, Yusef Sextet,
the Woodwind Consort, Pattie
Jones and Jack Le Seuer,
Michael Fishback and the
Durham Rangers, Jay Cunn
ingham, and David Langham.
In the Children's Area will be
story tellers, the Young Peo
ple's Performing Co., the
Studio Dance School and
special balloon tricks and
magic by Mr. Rain
bowDavid Bartlett. The
