Supply-Side Education Trains Most Black ! Professionals . MTUffDAY, SEPTEMBER U, 1S82 THE CAflOUNA tlMES-S Advocates of supply-side1 economics stress tax cuts and regulatory reforms . to help American industry supply goods and services. However, the next program on Tony Brown's Journal, the nation's 1 top-ranked black affairs pro gram, reveals that this premise is not a new body of theory. On the contrary, a university near Houston, Texas has been practicing this neoclassic mode of analysis since 1966. This edition, "Supply-Side Educa tion," focuses oh the suc cessful use of supply-side in higher education at Prairie View A&M University under the leadership of its president, Dr. Alvin I.. Thomas, v Tony Brown's Journal is the nation's longest national black; affairs series and has been sponsored by Pepji-Cola, Company for seven con secutive years. Televised na tionally on public television (PBS), the program will be. seen in this area on WUNC at 7:30 on Thursday, September 23. ' -i Tony Brown, host and ex ecutie producer, journeys to Prairie View A&M University to get a first-hand look at this black success story. He talks to the man who is responsible, for producing more black pro-1 fessionals each year than any college in America, Dr. Alvin Thomas. Dr Thomas explains ;. the dynamics at work: "We describe it by slogan we call, 'Operation Success' and our follow-up slogan, which we describe as 'Prairie View pft duces productive people.' That's what Prairie View is all about, producing productive t people to enter into the supply side of our free enterprise ' economy." Several surprising facts are , unveiled on the program. For ! example, Prairie View has graduated more than 50 per cent of the blacks currently enrolled at medical and dental schools and about 70 percent of the black registered nurses in Texas are graduates of Prairie View. It is also the ma jor producer of black engineers. The university has commis-. sioned more than 1,000 of ficers through the Army ROTC program. The Naval ROTC unit has commissioned more than 110 blacks. This represents more black Navy officers than all of the univer sities in the South have pro-( duced in the history of the na tion. Prairie View's drama group, ,,The Charles Gilpin Players, won the Southwestern Regionals and was picked as one of the six finalists to per- : form at the American Theatre Festival's annual engagement; . at the Kennedy Center irtj Washington the only black college selected. ! "SuppljT-Side Education" analyzes the reasons for Prairie View's phenomenal record. Other highlights on the program are Prairie View's outstanding science, engineer ing and business departments, along with its renowned rodeo team. Prairie View's academic program also emphasizes agriculture. "Agriculture is! big business," explains Dr. Thomas. In fact, the universi ty has become the interna tional center for dairy goats. Four million dollars is being spent on a dairy goat research center at Prairie View that promises to revolutionize the industry. The Harlem Globetrotters have traveled over six million miles, visited 94 countries on six continents and have been watched by an estimated 80 million spectators. "CUT 'ft!
