Children May Prefer
Nontraditional Foods
If your child refuses to eat
before going to school in the
mornings, try serving some
nontraditional foods for a
change.
Bacon and eggs or a bowl
of oatmeal may be the perfect
breakfast for. you, but may
have little appeal for your
, children, observes Sarah
Hinton, extension food
specialist, North Carolina ,
State University.
Start the school day by
giving your child cheese and
crackers, a baked custard or
his favorite soup.
. Or, dress up a traditional
food serve French toast
with a peanut butter filling.
Offer a favorite milk shake or
a glass of eggnog. All of these
are nutritious and give children
a good send-off each morning.
When planning a breakfast
menu, Mrs. Hinton suggests
that foods from at least three
of the four1, food groups be
included.
For school age children, it
is important to include foods
from the milk group at break
fast as well as at other meals.
Citrus fruit or juice at breakfast
provides a serving from the
fruit-vegetable food group and
the vitamin C requirement for
the day.
. In any breakfast menu, re
member to include foods that
provide enough calories for the
rooming's activities.
CMdren who eat breakfast,
featuring traditional or non
traditkmal foods, are more alert
and get more done. Breakfast
each morning also makes it
easier to meet the body's food
requirements each day.
