Twenty members attended. Union Community Club The Union Community Club met Thursday night, September 23, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Willie Covington on Obie Drive, The president, W.W. Sellers opened the meeting with prayer. The . guest speaker, Durham County Fire Marshal Richard J. Sauer, was introduced by Edward Rayford. He presented a short lecture and a film on "Fire Prevention". There was a short business discussion by the Sanitation Committee on issues concerning the pro-: nnal nf sewer extension and how it will affect Orin- da Drive and Barbee Road areas. , Members present were; Mrs. Elouise Gerald, Ms. Jackie Futrell and son, Rickey, Mrs. Dorothy Steele. Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Davis, Mrs. Georgia Thompson, Coston Johnson, Mr, and Mrs. Robert McRae and daughter, Yolanda, Thomas Taylor, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Speight, Edward Rayford, Charles Noell, Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Sellers and Mrs. Rachel Covington who, as hostess, served a beautiful repast. The devotional was led by Mrs. Carrie McRae and Mrs. Beatrice Lassiter. During this first meeting since the anniversary observance in July, each committee chairman reported. There was discussion concerning changing the flower ar- ' rangements from summer to winter, and how to uniform tfor funerals. The by-laws governing. the Floral Board were read and discussed. WSSU Honors Retirees The Durham Chapter of the WSSU Alumni Association held a reception in the home of Mrs. A.M. Rogers, alumna and hostess. Special recognition and gifts were presented to 1981-82 retired teachers: Alice Biggers, Virginia Bivens, Gladys Knox, Dorothy Mewborn, Helen Morrison and Loretha Parker. Randolph Mills, president, presented Certificates . of Merit for outstanding service and loyal support , given to the following alumnae: Mamie Alston, Helen Morrison, A.M. Rogers and Ernestine . Williams. ' Over thirty alumni, along with previously retired teachers, attended this occasion. Opening Meeting Mrs. Gertrude Gibson hosted the West Durham Blossom Garden Club in its opening meeting for the year at her home on Carroll Street on September 21 . ' The house was decorated with fall flowers from Mrs. Gibson's garden. Mrs. Mary Allison opened the Garden Gate. The agenda included an informative report from the state convention held in Raleigh in August; a pro gress report with photographs was given by Mrs. Naomi Parker on the project suggested at the con vention; things to be discussed in the club's pro gram book for the year; report of the junior garden club by the sponsors, Mrs. Gibson and Mrs. Red drick; suggestions for a Christmas social; and birth day gifts were presented to Mrs. Margaret Allen, Mrs. Margaret Siler, Mrs. Mary T, Horton and Mrs. Margaret Fuller. , .
