Angeles' KJLH, recently decided to throw an all-day bash as a thank you tor Ijs listeners, topping the star-studded concert was none other than Island recording artists Black Uhuru (left to right, Michael Rose, Puma Jones, and Ducky Simpson). Why did KJLH choose the highly accalaimed reg- 8 ae group to close a show that Included such acts as the CBS Jazz Ail tars (with celebrities like Herbie Hancock, Stanley Clarke and George Duke), Alphonse Mouzon and Marilyn Scott? According to a station spokesman, R had to do with Stevie Wonder's affection for reggae, and the fact that Black Uhuru Is probably the hottest new reggae group out there. "We thought It would be good to feature a reggae group because of Stevle's Involvement with the music, and Black uhuru. seems to be very popular in this area with a growing portion of our au dience," the spokesman said. , Black Uhuru's appeal Is based on a unique combination of talents. 1 Singers and songwriters Michael Rose and Ducky Simpson are: veterans of the Jamaican reggae scene who Joined forces with Puma Jones, an American-born former social worker, after Rose heard her singing a Bob Marley song through an open window one day. On bass and drums are Robbie Shakespeare and Sly Dunbar, respectively, the hot rhythm section who backed Peter Tosh and performed on records for everyone from Grace Jones to Joe Cocker. .
