Doctors Say
Train But
Don't Strain
The exercise boom has
helped millions , of
Americans to better
health., But beginners
should be careful not to
overdo it.
In Listen to Your
Body: Exercise and
Physical Fitness, a
Public Affairs Pam
phlet, Irving R. Dickman
explains how jogging
and other exercises can
improve physical health
and reduce mental stress.
He also describes how to
go about designing your
own exercise program,
including precautions
that should he taken.
The 28-page booklet is

Besides helping you
feel and look better, ex
ercise may lessen the
potential for heart
disease associated with
obesity and t inactivity.
Some experts believe an
exercise program can ac
tually reverse many of
the deteriorating effects
ascribed to aging. But
especially important for
people over 30, Dickman
suggests, is a medical
checkup so the doctor
can tell you jhow
strenuous an exercise or
jogging program you
should set for yourself.
"Most experts on
fitness," he points out...
recommend a program
20 to 30 minutes of exer'r
M -
week." This should in-
elude a proper warm-upc
before and cooling-down:
period after each session .
to help avoid musck
soreness and restore
blood circulation...
"Aching muscles the.
first few days after you
begin a fitness program :
are usually nothing to
worry about. But if
you're starting your pro
gram because you've
been living a. sedentary ;
life,, start slowly, "
Dickman warns. "An ex
ercise is acceptable if it
causes temporary
discomfort," he adds,"
"but not if it inflicts:
pain. That is quite
possibly the most impor
tant training rule: Train,
but don't strain. Listen
to your body."
Dickman 1 offers
specific tips for would-be
joggers and also con
siders a variety of other
activities that can helo
you become and stay
physically fit.
