Green If you are poor and ire a Durham resident and have problems pay ing your rent, you should :ontact the Durham Housing Authority. Under a federally financed program, the Housing Authority will pay as much aVlOO per ;ent of your rent if you jr your family qualify. According to Ms., Nilsa Baird, who directs he program for the city ibout 605 families now .eceive assistance from ;he city. The city is look ing for about 187 more families to help. "Many of the families that we assist have very low incomes," Ms. Baird said. "The program is one of the better ones that the city has," Under the program, ,:he city contracts with local .;Vp;AV(tjwb?se' rentaT 'units meet' 'federal' and city standards, Ms. Baird said. The property owned by the landlords is compared to similar property in the city to make sure that the rental fees are not out of line. "Currently, we are dealing with nine or ten major landlords who have apartment com plexes with twenty or more units. And we are servicing about 600 families," she added. Ms. Baird said that the city spends about $97,000 each month in its rent subsidy program. The portion that the family pays is based on its total income She says that no more than 30 per cent of a family's annual income goes toward jits share of the rent. Ms. Baird said that the program has been in ex istence in Durham since 1976, but that her divi-; sion has not taken any applications since 1981. She .said that there were 2,000 applications : on file and that those persons who had applied during the last two years should contact the Hous ing Authority to updat their applications. ted? of atrial !
