4 THE CAROLINA TIMES SATURDAY, OCTOBER 23. 1982 Women 6ri The Rise In Dentistry By He nrv Diivall Amid the ; relaxing music. dental care literature and the whir of high powered drills, change is under way in the nation's denial of fices. A growing number of women are becoming demists in a traditionally ma le -dom i n at ed pro fes -sion. In 1977. 1,900 of I lit" 117, R90 dentists in the' country, or nearly two per cent, were women, t according to American Dental Association data. ? "inlay, the number of emale dentists is substantially risins; because of an upsurue in female eurollmenl in dent ill schools. ADA statistics for 19X1 -.how there are 4,227 women enrolled in he 60 dental schools in the United States, con stituting 18.7 per cent of the overall enrollment of -22.621. In the preceding year, women accounted for 17 per cent of denial school .enrollment. 'Dr. ' ' Jeanne ; C. Sinkrord. dean of I he Howard University Col lege of Dentistry . in Washington. D.C., remembers when female enrollment was 1.2 per cent in the 1950s when whe entered dental school. "Most U.S. den tal schools at the time had no women at all," she recalls. Dr. Sink ford represents the strides women have made in demist ry. She is believed to be the first female dean of a dental school in the nation. Howard Unvcrsily's denial school has a' higher percentage of women students than any other dental school in the United Stales. Bas ed on 1981-82. Blacks constitute 4.5 per cent 'of the total enroll ment in the nation's den tal schools. The women's libera tion movement helped to open doors for women in dentistry. Concurrently, more funds became available for all students including women and ad mission practices were "liberalized" in the '70s. says Dr. Sink ford. One- major obstacle which until recently con fronted students seeking to enter dental schools was the "carving test." which examined visual motor skills. This manual test, which in volved carving an object to scale, was intended to analyze whether a pro spective dental student could perceive objects in different. dimensions, working with the hands and mind. Dr. Sinkford notes that most women were at a disadvantage in this test because men were traditionally exposed to "shop skills." The carv ing test, however, was superceded in 1973 by the Perceptual Motor Ability Test (PMAT). which is part of the Den tal Admission Test. Dr. Sinkford stresses that this mcchanisrnjs a more equitable way of predic ting visual motor aptitude.- The first female den tist in the United Stales was I.ucy Hobbs-Taylor. who graduated from Ohio College of Denial Surgery in 1866. Dr. Sinkford points oiit that Howard graduated a woman. Mary Woolen, in the denial school's first class ; in 1883. "Howard has traditionally been one of the few' U.S. denial schools lo admit women on an equal basis as men," she emphasizes. In 1949, New York philanthropist and den tist I ouise (. A.: This is a condition in which the free edge of the nail has penetrated and become embedded in the surrounding soft tissue. Among the most common causes of this condition is improper trimming of the nail. Toenails should not be trim med like fingernails in that they should be cut straight across where both nail margins are visi ble. If the corner of the nail is visible, it has less of a tendency to become ingrown and subse quently infected. Dr. James A.
