SATURDAY. CCTCSER 23, 1 332 -THE CAgCLI?4A T!H:S-S T Central Faces "Must" Game Against ECSU By Elson Armstrong The State Fair is not the only thing jumping in ; the Triangle area this, weekend. There are two crucial collegiate foot ball games that , should keep the afternoon in teresting. One is a heated grudge match while the other finds a coach fighting for his football life. ' North Carolina Cen tral and Elizabeth City State hit the turf at 1:90 p.m. There is no love lost here. In 1980, NCCU entered the ECSU game with an unbeaten con ference slate. Central won 28-8. But last year, ECSU got revenge when . Central played them in ; Elizabeth City. ,'. i This game is also' very important , as NCCU. ' with a 5-1 record, seeks1 to catch , Johnson C. ' Smith of Charlotte in the ; run for the CIAA's , Southern Crown. Smith , is also 5-1. Central plays'' Smith for Homecoming1 November 6. Central can ill-afford another loss. A capacity crowd of 12,000 could be on hand if the weather holds out. In Raleigh, spirits are' really low for fans of N.C. State, despite the! Wolfpack's 4-2 record. State is still licking wounds suffered during last Saturdays 41-9 shellacking by arch-rival , North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Things don't appear to be easing up on the 'Pack as defending na tional champion Clem son comes to town. The ' Tigers pasted Duke 49-1 4 and appear to be back on their top ten roll. N.C. State fans arc down and angry. Another . embarrassi ng loss like last Saturday's ,and Head -Coach Monte Kiffin could be given his . walking, papers. State officials advise that all fans planning to attend the 1 p.m. game should leave for the. game a few hours earlier than usual. There should be at least 50,000 fans on hand for the game plus another 150,000 atten ding the State Fair across the highway. Duke hits the road lo Maryland in an attempt to get back into victory lane following three straight losses. a Big Six title On The Line r I iyIti iS. i r .,- ' 2 111 i&E '- HOMECOMING ACTION Quarterback David Johnson hands off to running back Stephon Jacobs in Hillside's 20-1 6 victory over Person High during last week's homecoming game. pnoiysiiMiyW Scoreboard .v -f Results, Oct. 16th Ala A&M 31. In the Bi.x Six (4-A schools), the conference race remains torrid as Henderson Vance, Nor thern Durham, and Hillside of Durham bat tle for two state playoff berths. Northern and Vance collide this Friday night in Durham County Stadium (game time is 8 p.m.). These two old rivals should draw a large crowd because this year more than bragging rights are at stake. Henderson Vance is undefeated (7-0) and the Vikings have only given up one touchdown all season. They are the No. 1 ranked 4-A team in eastern North Carolina, according to a poll by the Raleigh News and Observer. Northern which has been getting by on sheer talent in recent games will have to play well for the entire game. , Northern Coach Ken Browning says, "They (Vance) have the finest defensive team in the state. On offense we've got to stop Perry and Thomas, their two fine backs". The winner of this game will definitely be in the driver's seat for the Big Six Championship because Northern is also undefeated in conference play. Overall the Knights Across ' town playoff fever is still alive at Hillside as the Hornets (2-1 in league and 3-4-1 overall) journey to Chapel Hill to take on the Tigers. HHS Head Mentor Jones said "We are very excited, th team knows that if it wins all of its remaining games we can go to the playoffs". Hillside -won its game last week from Roxboro 20-16. Jones says "We are roo Hi nlouinn iolf W i van siajr uiisy vii. v- hadn't beaten Roxboro in awhile". Jones says that "Brad Sullivan will miss this game but he is expected back for the season en ding game against Vance". The Hillside-Vance game will be played on Saturday October 30 at NCCU's O'Kelly Stadium. Jones says the game was switched for several reasons. "In the first place it was originally scheduled as a Thursday night' game. We don't like for our kids to play on weeknights, if possible". "Secondly most of our fans live in the vicinity of NCCU, we hope to at tract 'a larger crowd plus Central is away that day and we hope to attract their fans too." Hillside and Vance will kick off at 1:30 n.m. On October 30. Durham High, which shut out highly ranked Vance on the road in the second half last week, journeys to Roxboro to play Person this Friday. The RnllHnoc whr arp still seeking their first win of the season reportedly played ex cellently on ' defense against Vance. Bulldogs' Coach Elliot says, "We have an un- preaiq4Die nrarry wun Person. Ofterf the team that's favored doesn't win. We haven't won in Roxboro since 1976." "It's their homecom ing and we expect it to be W7 a luugn game, wegu in to all of our games with the idea of winning." 191 161 187. 564: Buck Parker: 218. 14! 190, 553. , Teams Late Comers:. 788. 810, 85( 2448; "Nothing Fancy": 82( 791. 831. 2448; Four B s: 81: 760, 854. 2426.
