There also will be an art reference library, a museum shop will make available the most comprehensive selection of art and art reference books in the state and, eventually, a restaurant. Although only a 15-minute drive from downtown Raleigh, the new museum is easily accessible ' from Research Triangle Park and the university towns of Durham and Chapel Hill. North Carolina's art col lection was the first to be purchased by a state legislature, as a result of an historic appropriation of SI million for art works in 1947. The museum's history is one of continued cooperation between state government and private enterprise; the new building's $15,75 million construction cost, for exam ple, represents $10.75 million . legislative appropriations and $5 million in private donations. The museum's collection is particularly notable for its Italian Renaissance" and Baroque, Dutch and Flemish 17th century, British 18th century and American 19th century paintings, and for its works by North Carolina ar tists. Of special importance is the Samuel H. Kress Collec tion, comprising 70 Icnidsnce -nd E::oquf . paintings and sculptures. With the exception of the National Gallery in Washington, . the North Carolina museum has the largest and most important Kress collection in the U.S. In the past decade, the museum also has acquired significant examples of Egyptian, Greek, Roman, African, Oceanic and pre Columbian art as well as a growing collection of con temporary works. Some of the objects from these collec tions will be on display for the first time in the new building. Gov. Jim Hunt will speak at the opening ceremony on Tuesday April 5 at 5 p.m. The opening week will in clude special events for business leaders, artists, art educators, museum officials, patrons and members of the North Carolina Art Society. Saturday and Sunday, April 9-10, will be festival days for the public, with tours, demonstrations, con certs and other activities planned both' inside the museum and on its grounds. During Museum Days, April 11-16, a half-day of events will be scheduled at the museum for each of 12 areas across the state.
