Such names a Sir Walter Raleigh, Ralph Lane, John White, Virginia Dare, Queen Elizabeth I, Phillip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe, Manteo and Wanchese were some of the central figures in this first experiment in English col onization of the New World. Thoughthe experiment did not succeed totally, it did show the feasibility of such a venture and years later the English established a perma nent colony in Jamestown, Virginia. Those first attempts at set tlement left a mark on history as well as creating one of the world's greatest unsolved mysteries that being the disappearance of the second colony which was established in 1587. That became known as "the lost colony" and since has been depicted in the nation's oldest outdoor symphonic drama, Paul Green's "The Lost Colony", now in its 42nd season. The 400th birthday party will include a celebration in England, in April 1984 when representatives ; from : North Carolina will visit that coun try to commemorate 1 the . departure of the first of the Roanoke Voyages from Plymouth, England. In North Carolina a replica of the ship on which the first colonists sailed to the New World will be con structed in the coming mon ths. Visitors to the Manteo waterfront will be able to watch the construction. When complete -the ship will sail to North Carolina ports which can handle its eight foot draft. The ship wilt be permantly berthed in Manteo and will be an of ficial state historic site. A host of other events, all across North Carolina, will be part of this celebration which will .end in August , 1987 on the 400th anniver sary of the birthday of Virginia Dare, ' the , first English child born in the New World. That's when the last of the 400 candles on the birthday cake will be ex tinguished. ; . v Maya Angelou, Andre Cameron To Key A&T Arts Series -GREENSBORO A fuH-A fledged presentation of Puc cini's opera, "La Boheme" in English, a lecture by black author Maya Angelou and concerts by Greensboro violinist, Andre Cameron and the Easy Moving Dance Company will highlight the annual Lyceum Series at A&T State University.
