8 THE CAROLINA TIMES-SATURDAY, OCTOBER 30; 1982 " Grand Master Bring Their Fasj ancf f?e Firous Five 'Rap' To Raleigh Sunday By Teresa Rose Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five bring their Halloween "rapping" , rap show to Raleigh's Dorton Arena Sunday, sounding off at 7 p.m. Dorton Arena is on Hillsborough Street. Also appearing on the show will be Howard Johnson, Zapp, and The Johnson Crew Tickets, Tanging in price from $8 for advance admis sion to $9 at the door; can be purchased at several Raleigh and Durham locations. They include School Kids Records on Hillsborough Street in Raleigh and Bob's Gulf Sta tion on Alston Avenue in Durham. As an added bonus, a $100 door prize will be given for the best Halloween costume at the show. ' Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five have been at the top of national soul charts many times, riding the crest of the new and popular "rapping". The music "rap" matches short and choppy melodies against a harmonic trame oi tight rhythmic lyrics. The lyrics make sense after a line or two if you listen quickly enough. But in the interim, you have to just swing to the beat. . Grandmaster hits such as "Hash to the Beat", "Freedom" and "Message" get top radio airplay and the group has made several na tional television appearances as well. The group, one of several rap groups that exploded on to the pop scene about two years ago, features a master "rhythm flasher" and five other dudes who say they are furious. With their most recent release, "Freedom", cer tified gold in less than six months, these six "rapping" young men from the Bronx are on the move. The group's leader is Joseph Saddler 23, better known as Grand Master Flash.
