" Williamson, a- forme Durhamite, was honored recently by the Bar Association which carries his name, for his long and prestigious career of service to the Vance County community and the city of Henderson. ' . The tribute was held in the Eaton-Johnson Junior High Cafeteria. The Honorable Charles L. Becton, Justice of the North Carolina Court of Appeals, was the speaker. The honoree's portrait was unveil ed to hang in the Vance County Courthouse. Williamson began his law practice in Durham with his former St. Joseph's AME Church Sunday School teacher, the late R. McCanti Andrews, who inspired him to pursue a legal career. After his marriage to Ms. Mamie Simmons, a native of Henderson, he moved his practice of law in 1933 to Henderson where it has continuously grown. n The Williamsons have two children: a son, Dr. Charles W. Williamson, Jr., of Knoxville, Ten nessee, and a daughter, Ms. Robbie Truesdale of Gastonia. Attorney Williamson is a relative of Mesdames Gertrude Bland, Montrose Robinson Scott, Lizzie Person, Catherine McKinnie and Pearlie M. Haskins of Durham. . T S ( 1 I r i iVl "- Central has been whistl ed for penalties .115; times, totaling more than 1119 yards. Their biggest problems appear to be il-j legal motion (25 penalties) and' personal fouls (24). The Eagles have also fumbled 36 Jimes this year hd lost 19 of them. - ; Smith will come into O'Kelly . Field ranked number one in the CIAA southern, division (5-0 and 6-2 overall), but with some problems of their own. v , - The biggest problem is that Smith has no runn ing game. More than . half pf its offensive yar dage has been through the air. So the Bulls' hopes are riding on the arm of their quarter-: back, John Henry Thomas. ! And a pretty good arm it is. l nomas has 141 com pletions on 274 attempts, and Ingram is tied for . the team lead in unassisted tackles with 17. Tied with Ingram is junior tackle Barry McLaughlin, who also has seven quarterback ; ; sacks to his credit, three of them unassisted. ; But when it comes to pulling down the ball carrier, Smith is no slouch. Leading the team, having set a school season record just last week, is Greg Warren, a sophomore middle linebacker. He has 142 tackles to his credit so far this season, . 48 of them unassited. o ,i , And so this southern division championship game boils down to who can get to do what the) do best. Central has won most of its games by simpl) "out-talenting" the op- position, . and then they've been able to hang " on through the fumbles and eight touchdowns, . and the penalties. When He's thrown for 1,6 15.; the Eagles lost, for the yards, but he's also qm"ost part, they beat thrown 12 interceptions. . themselves. His favorite receiver is , Though Smith is wide receiver Nate , assured its first winning McDowell, who is a season under Coach Homecoming this notice or this notice will plead ed in bar of their recovery. At 6-2, 230 pounds, he's a crushing runner who breaks tackles well, runs over people, and also has sur prising speed. Tate has scored nine touchdowns this yew to go along with his 898 rushing yards. He DR. FORT is averaging 4.5 yards per carry. Tate's biggest drawback is an offensive line that is often less than effective blocking on sweeps, and picking" up opponents downfield. But for all their talenj, the overriding question facing Central this week is can they manage not to : fumble the ball game away, or get penalized put of a victory. So far this season, three-time AU-CIAA, and who has grabbed 31 aerials this year for 407 yards. But Thomas .also likes to throw to his tight end, Ed McNeely, and his fullback Tim Newman. And so Saturday's game will wind up being passing versus Central's bone-crushing defense that has allowed only 188 yards total offense per game. The leaders in that respect are senior ends Lorenzo Ingram and Nate Johnson. Together they've sacked quarter backs 20 times (10 each), Wiley Harris, none of their victories have been easy. For example, last week, the Bulls sneaked by Winston-Salem State 6-3, and earlier they beat Livingstone College by one, Lenoir-Rhyne by 3, Virginia State by 6 and Bowie State by 7. When Smith lost (S.C. State and Fort Bailey State), it was because the opposition defended well against the pass. The Eagles will have to do the same thing, plus having to play with more disicipline and better control.
